Edward, if you're still around, could you answer a few questions about Nanchang University?

I'm thinking about applying for a masters with some language training beforehand, so I was wondering if you could talk a bit about the class structure, the student body makeup and whether the administration is helpful or a hindrance.

How is the location off campus? Are there good places to day-trip nearby?

Thanks, and I hope you are still active!

I see that the postings for this thread have been long time ago, but since I am in NCU now, I might add some information for later readers.

Currently I am only doing language classes, but I will start my master degree in this same university in September 2017.

As for the dorms, they are alright I guess. If you want to cook your own food you will need to buy all of the necessary things like electrical stove, fridge and stuff. Paradoxically you are not allowed to have those in your room, but don't worry too much about this ;)

The campus is pretty big and offers everything you need, there are shops, canteens, restaurants, sports facilities etc. The best canteen IMO is the muslim canteen opposite the main building. I find the prices for a meal quite low but I have not enough experience to relate them too other places or universities. I can be full during lunch spending 5 RMB, but depending on what I eat sometimes I will also spend up to 12 RMB.

The Chinese classes are not designed well, repetitive and not suitable for high level learners. If you have already come to a certain level you will have to put in a lot of extra effort outside of the class room to improve. But the teachers are nice and willing to help and I think honest in their pursuits to help you improve (they just don't know the right teaching methods, which I don't blame them for).

Touristically there are some nice spots close to Nanchang like Meiling 梅岭 or Lushan 庐山. But for the best destinations you would have to go to neighbouring provinces like Hunan, Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong etc. For that matter Jiangxi province is at least strategically situated.

For any other questions let me know!
