FlurZero Posted June 9, 2015 at 01:55 PM Report Share Posted June 9, 2015 at 01:55 PM Anyway, female fronted rock bands that are current. I tried googling for around 2 hours but all I could find were oldish bands. I was wondering if any new age bands existed with my description? Angelina Posted June 9, 2015 at 02:23 PM Report Share Posted June 9, 2015 at 02:23 PM Hedgehog has a female vocalist http://site.douban.com/hedgehog/ http://www.last.fm/music/Hedgehog
kdavid Posted June 9, 2015 at 04:48 PM Report Share Posted June 9, 2015 at 04:48 PM Check out the line up for the just-passed "Beijing Drunk Fest" held on June 6. I know they had at least one front woman.
Demonic_Duck Posted June 9, 2015 at 05:16 PM Report Share Posted June 9, 2015 at 05:16 PM 刺猬/Hedgehog are pretty good. I seem to remember the frontwoman also has another side-project, but I forgot what it's called. There's a female-fronted avant-garde rock band called SUBS, definitely worth checking out. I just saw someone post about a gig on my Weixin friends circle where the lineup included a band called 朝生暮死/Ephemerality, a "female-fronted Chinese death metal band". No idea if they're any good. They're the only ones I can think of off the top of my head.
oceancalligraphy Posted June 9, 2015 at 06:42 PM Report Share Posted June 9, 2015 at 06:42 PM This blog post (with YouTube clips) was published in March: http://www.gq.com.tw/blog/hitodjerichung/detail-386.html The writer is a DJ at the 宜蘭 (Yilan) branch of HitFM, probably the largest modern music radio station in Taiwan. The bands have different styles, but generally fall under indie.
renzhe Posted June 9, 2015 at 08:05 PM Report Share Posted June 9, 2015 at 08:05 PM Is Happy Avenue considered current? One of my faves.
Tianjin42 Posted June 10, 2015 at 06:07 AM Report Share Posted June 10, 2015 at 06:07 AM Helen Feng fronts Nova Heart. Not exactly rock (think a modern take on Blondie + electronica). Some interesting stuff and playing the UK at the moment. http://site.douban.com/novaheart/
Demonic_Duck Posted June 10, 2015 at 06:51 AM Report Share Posted June 10, 2015 at 06:51 AM Looks like both Angelina and I were a bit off the mark with 刺猬/Hedgehog - it's actually male-fronted with female backing vocals (石璐/Atom, who also plays drums). The "side project" I was thinking of was NovaHeart (as Tianjin42 mentioned above), which Atom also plays drums in, but it actually is female-fronted (冯海宁/Helen Feng). Not sure if she has any side-projects of her own. Edit: Another one from Beijing: 后海大鲨鱼 (don't know if they have an English name... Shark in Houhai?)
gato Posted June 10, 2015 at 07:24 AM Report Share Posted June 10, 2015 at 07:24 AM Ourself Beside Me was one, but I don't know if they are still performing. http://maybemars.org/index.php/artists/ourself-beside-me/ It seems that rock is fading in China. Top local bands like Car Sick Cars have moved on and haven't been replaced with same caliber acts.
Demonic_Duck Posted June 10, 2015 at 07:38 AM Report Share Posted June 10, 2015 at 07:38 AM It seems that rock is fading in China. Top local bands like Car Sick Cars have moved on and haven't been replaced with same caliber acts. Don't forget though, people have been predicting the imminent death of rock and roll for decades now. Doesn't seem to have happened yet. A friend who's quite involved in music circles did cryptically tell me that Beijing (in particular, as opposed to other cities) was becoming "a desert", though. I can only assume he was referring to increasing government interference in events (e.g. the unexpected cancellation of two major music festivals in Beijing this year). FlurZero Posted June 10, 2015 at 07:49 AM Author Report Share Posted June 10, 2015 at 07:49 AM Not really sure how to quote on this forum but, thanks Guys I'm really enjoying some of the bands you guys have suggested. Seems that more hardcore music isn't as popular in China as I thought it would be.
Tianjin42 Posted June 10, 2015 at 07:56 AM Report Share Posted June 10, 2015 at 07:56 AM If you are looking for something a little more hardcore then I recommend "Rustic". They don't have a female lead but they do have a male bassist who occasionally plays sporting a bleach-blond mullet whilst wearing a dress and thick make up They are heavily influenced by The Clash and The Sex Pistols. Also, won Global Battle of the bands a few years back. I had a couple of great nights at venues watching these guys play. http://site.douban.com/rustic/
Tianjin42 Posted June 10, 2015 at 07:57 AM Report Share Posted June 10, 2015 at 07:57 AM "If you are looking for something a little more hardcore..." Not the best way to begin a post perhaps.
Haast Posted June 10, 2015 at 09:29 AM Report Share Posted June 10, 2015 at 09:29 AM Cosign on Nova Heart - saw them at their album release show a few months back, & their new album has some of the most gorgeous packaging I've seen in a while. Two indie-ish female-fronted bands from Chengdu are Hiperson/海朋森 & the Hormones/荷尔蒙小姐乐队 - former is postpunk/shoegaze-y, latter is more new wave/electro-ish. Hiperson's currently on tour to promote their new album; I'm seeing them in GZ this weekend Taipei's Skip Skip Ben Ben might do the trick, as well - another band in the shoegaze vein, but as an unreconstructed My Bloody Valentine fan I'm not complaining. http://downloads.maybemars.org/album/no-need-for-another-history http://kiwese.co.nz/2015/04/20/interview-with-hiperson/ http://site.douban.com/heermeng/ http://kiwese.co.nz/2014/10/17/not-just-a-girl-band-interview-with-ming-ming-from-the-hormones/ http://skipskipbenben.bandcamp.com/ http://www.mtviggy.com/articles/skip-skip-ben-ben-gazes-into-the-noise/

Lu Posted June 10, 2015 at 12:05 PM Report Share Posted June 10, 2015 at 12:05 PM They don't have a female lead but they do have a male bassist who occasionally plays sporting a bleach-blond mullet whilst wearing a dress and thick make up If men in dresses count too, then check out Second Hand Rose 二手玫瑰. Their lead singer often performs in drag. No actual women in sight there, but they still sound good.
Demonic_Duck Posted June 10, 2015 at 12:25 PM Report Share Posted June 10, 2015 at 12:25 PM Also check out 南无/Namo, they have both men in drag and actual female backing vocals!
renzhe Posted June 10, 2015 at 07:31 PM Report Share Posted June 10, 2015 at 07:31 PM There seems to be a healthy metal scene in China, if that's the type of hardcore you're looking for, but not much in terms of frontwomen. I will abuse this opportunity to recommend Tengger Cavalry, one of the most awesome bands I've heard in a while: https://tenggercavalry.bandcamp.com/music
ChTTay Posted June 11, 2015 at 05:41 AM Report Share Posted June 11, 2015 at 05:41 AM I second Hiperson / 海朋森. A good band. I'll try catch them in Beijing on their tour.
stapler Posted June 11, 2015 at 06:29 AM Report Share Posted June 11, 2015 at 06:29 AM Just listened to 海朋森. I gotta say I never thought I'd hear a Chinese band that I'd actually enjoy. Anything else similar?
