Although I haven't passed any English exam except for the Dutch 高考 and never managed to make it to the end of a Dickens novel, so what do I know. Seconding recommendations for 活着 and 圈子圈套. Also search for threads like 'what should I read as my first Chinese novel', you might find some good recommendations there.
