Hi guys,

I would need some help to find a list of the most common chenyu. In fact, my knowledge of chengyu is quite low, and i'd like to improve it.

I watch one chengyu flash cartoon everyday, which basically explains the story of a chengyu. Matter of fact, my chinese friend told me that some of them are really not useful.

So, instead of learning everything, i'd like to focus of the most common of them. So, if someone can tell me where i might find a list, it would be great. :D

Whether a 成语 is useful or not, the answer differs to different people. For peasant, a dozen will be sufficient.

This may help you (from Sinosplice).

One the other hand listening to chengyu stories is a good way to learn about Chinese culture enventhough I agree that it does not help to use the chengyu which is introduced; but who cares ? I you need to hear a chengyu in various occasions to then be able to use it in an appropriate way.

ahah thanks for this list! I will try it.

Matter of fact, I have just seen the new 三国志 at cinema with andy lau and sammo hung. And like a lot of movies of this kind, they use a lot of chengyu. I found it tough, so i decided to work on it.

"100 Common Chinese Idioms and Set Phrases" (ISBN 7-80052-708-5) lists a hundred selected chengyus with the short story behind each of them in both Chinese and English.

The list from http://www.plecoforu...c.php?f=7&t=516 doesn't have English definitions for each chengyu. Does anybody have a list of must-know chengyu side-by-side with English definitions? This way I can get them all down by rote within a week and can avoid looking dumb every time some guy uses a chengyu on me. :)

Also, was going to memorize that list of chengyu by making up my own English definitions based on what my girlfriend explains to me, but she said many of the chengyu in that list are very old and uncool to use. And I wouldn't want to be caught using uncool chengyus now would I?

*Edit - I've decided to start translating each of these idioms so that that I can memorize them all. Wonder if anybody has already done this?

For those who are interested, these webpages might be useful ->

I've translated the PlecoForums chengyu list with pinyin and definitions here. Also the Chinese Tools chengyu dictionary mentioned above is simply great for looking up and learning chengyus!

Is there a list of the most commonly used Chengyu?

It would be nice to see a list of the chengyu must commonly used in colloquial speech but even a list of ones most frequently occurring on the internet would be nice....

Any ideas?

These are all great, but I was thinking of a list of chengyu in order of occurrence, just like that list I have seen for most commonly occurring characters. I guess 乱七八糟 or 胡说八道 would be in the top 5.

Attached are 2 lists of chengyus that would be a good base for advanced learners to study from (the files are in UTF-8 format; only the words are included to be easily imported into Pleco):

1. a list of 260 chengyus from the SIngapore Ministry of Education
2. a list of 430 commonly-used chengyus I got from the Internet (there might be some overlap with the Singapore list): http://xf.2000y.net/...ews&NewsID=1653

500 Common Chinese Idioms is also worth reading. The five-star review on there pretty much sums up how awesome I think it is.

Bump. Looks the the hardcover is 144 USD.

The paperback version is about 48 USD; the kindle version is about 46 USD. Not cheap, but worth the price.

I downloaded a sample of the Kindle version on my iPad and wasn't pleased with the way Chinese characters were displayed, so I went for the dead tree version. It's well-written and is helping me learn the idioms.

Looks like most of Routledge's books are pricey. I'm looking forward to their forthcoming book about 俗语.
