How about punctuation marks, are they included? If you have link to somewhere on the Edexcel website where this information can be seen that would be useful. Looking at the last sample essay on http://www.edexcel.com/migrationdocuments/GCE%20New%20GCE/Sample%20essays%20with%20commentaries.pdf (海儿), the cited 489 characters in the essay comes from a count that excludes the quotations. It seems they have to be referenced (which should be easy with the plan). Punctuation marks are certainly not included (again, analyse that essay). I'm not entirely sure about the quotes for non-literature essays though. If they are referenced then it shouldn't matter (from what I remember about Edexcel A-level English Literature regulations)... but I find no evidence in the A-level Chinese specification ot the publicly available resources on the Edexcel website. 5 weeks + 1 day to go!
