Pattern of consecutive verbs

Hello,

I would appreciate your input about translating a sentence, and in this way to understand the pattern here, with a special attention to the words at the end of the sentence (bolded):

"...以此来带动安溪整个茶产业的转型提升"

"..hence to stimulate in Anxi an entire transformation and advancement of the tea industry."

How would you translate this sentence?

Do you see connection between them that should be expressed in the translation?

Thanks in advance!

Though I think your placement of the word "entire" and use of the word "hence" may be the most problematic aspects of your translation... I see this as an equivalency between 转型 and 提升, i.e. the 转型 is the 提升, or at least the 转型 leads to the 提升.

But I don't know how I would express that using less words than you have.

"... thus driving the transformation and advancement of Anxi's entire tea industry."

It is important first to understand that Chinese often puts two verbs or adjectives together to make a sentence sound more expressive. So you often see expressions like "effective and efficient", "improve and perfect", etc. in Chinese-English translatese. Of course there is nothing grammatically wrong with these expressions, but in English we rarely write like this as it looks too long-winded.

If it was me, I would just translate the sentence as "to transform Anxi's tea industry," since in English if something is transformed, it's implied that it's advanced too. To put two verbs of such similar meaning together is really unnecessary, unless you were doing something like legal translation where the meaning and placement of every word matters.

The placement of the 的 matters.

By placing it before the final 4 characters, it means the final 4 characters are to be taken as a singular (or at least closely related) concept that is the recipient of the modification of the rest of the phrase.

Plus, "advancement" would probably be a different word, like 推进 or 先进

提升 should be a rise of some sort, or climb, almost like 提高 (to raise).  Though not "lift" because there is a mild implication of active ascent, rather than the passive implied by "lift".  So you could go with enhance or upgrade, but I'd probably go with ascent or climb, used figuratively.

So I would translate it as

"in order to bring about the transformational ascent of Anxi's entire tea industry."

Just for giggles, consider how the meaning changes if you move the 的:

...以此来带动安溪整个茶产业转型提升

would be:

in order to bring about the ascent of Anxi's entire tea industry transformation.

Or ...以此来带动安溪整个茶产业转型提升

would change the meaning to something like:

in order to bring about Anxi's transformational ascent of the entire tea industry.

Bottom line, however, is this phrase is buzzword-heavy enough that any/all of our individual translations get the point across well enough.

Hi,

Thank you all for the replies.
I tend to agree that there is a causative connection between the verbs, that one lead to the other.
It seems to me to be like 我出去买东西, I go out (in order to) buy stuff/do shopping. The connection is given implicitly. That's a difficult point since there are no conjunction for verbs for these type of connections.
