建设

I have this text from my text book. I thought 建设 means 'build, construct', by association maybe 'develop, development', but I can't figure out what it is doing in the second sentence. I put the 3 sentences for context. Any tips out there please?

I don't too much care for 'use for copyright building'.

尽管在网络上播放电视剧,电影的盗版现象仍然存在,但人们的版权意识已经越来越强。目前,优酷网融资的几千万美元中,超过一亿元人民币将用于版权建设。悠视网则表示正在筹备一个版权基金,基金规模达十几亿元人民币,主要用于购买影视版权。

I would guess it's being used as a noun - "a construction" or "constructions".

But give this context, a better translation would be "works"

As in - X amount of money to use on copyright works.

It's my best guess, I haven't dealt much with this kind of language.

Someone gave me this translation:

将用于版权建设

are being used to establish copyright protection [for their videos].  (优酷网 does not actually make videos.)

This equates 建设 with 'establish'. I thought '将‘ was 'will', but he seems to think it is '将用  'use'.

It cannot be that expensive to establish one's own own rights to intellectual property, so I think they are:

a. buying the rights to use films or mvs,

b. using the money to pay royalties for say, Hollywood films they have on their sites.

c. under WTO they are paying a backlog of royalties which they previously did not pay.

d. something else.

This was just a short clip in a 听力练习, I have no further context。

The Chinese is clear. All of the b-d you mentioned are not mentioned at all. Only buying copyrights is mentioned. So I think it may be that you are being dense again perhaps. I personally think it is the English that is clumsy, as the way we talk about copyright is awkward to begin with. We say one "has the copyright to" something and it does not mean you own anything, because you don't own rights, you just have them. But copyright is bought. Sigh, English.

陈德聪 - I am sure we are dense :-)  And your response is funny.  Copyright is an pretty abstract concept - you say the Chinese is clear but I am struggling to understand what the sentence, especially "建设" means.  Sorry for being so dense;

If you have the copyright to something it could mean either you created something (as an artist or programmer or something like that) and your own the intellectual property completely, or (as a business) you purchased some kind of legal agreement (license) to "exploit" the intellectual property for some purpose --- e.g. you own the right to make toys, or broadcast videos or distribute apps, or translate it, or something like that.

So it seems like YouKu spent a lot of money to buy the copyright licenses (probably for lots of movies and TV shows from foreign countries).  So they probably bought the rights to broadcast lots of videos, which previously the were broadcasting without a legal agreement from the people who made the videos.

I'm just confused about what 超过一亿元人民币将用于版权建设 means.   You say the Chinese is clear - what do you think they spent 一亿万人民币 to buy?  What does 建设 mean in that context.

Hope to hear your ideas - even if we are dense :-)

... The 100,000,000+ RMB is being put towards that. That whole big explanation you gave is what 版权建设 entails. Funny how four characters can mean all that. To be fair, the phrase 版权建设 is probably considered vague, but it couldn't really mean anything other than that they're spending money to buy the right to broadcast videos. In theory it could mean that they are spending the money to buy the right to make toys and whatever, but Youku doesn't really do that, do they? Is there something wrong with the word "establish"???

It is not very specific. Establishing Copyright can also mean they're producing their own movies and shows, creating new copyright material. This is what LeTV is planning to do. You will need external knowledge about YouKu to know this is not the case for them.
