CICPA / HKICPA anyone?

Hello everybody,

It's time for us at my workplace to fill out goal setting forms. An assignment at one of our Chinese member firms has been one of my mid/long term goals since I started to work here, I thought it would be good idea to support this by including an HKICPA or CICPA exam as a goal as well. Has anyone taken either of the two exams? How hard are they? Are these the infamous, grinding-style, learn everything word-by-word type exams like Chinese gaokao/university exams, or are they on the practical side (taking that both are accounting exams after all)? I'm quite familiar with the Chinese Accounting System, and I guess the HK system also wouldn't be a great issue as I work with IFRS on a daily basis and I'm at the professional part with ACCA.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)

I was afraid of this kind of answers. If it is true, then CICPA is the dumbest accounting/finance-related exam I have ever heard of. Knowing the related regulations is only 20% of our work, the other 80% is about proper application - which is way much harder and needs very good holistic view on things. I know why memorizing is an accepted way of "learning" in China, but I can't help but think that in this case it is quite close to pathetic.

I also contacted with Hong Kong colleagues, and they told me that HKICPA has a mutual agreement with ACCA, therefore I can become a member of HKICPA after qualifying with ACCA. I need to re-take some 3 HK specific modules at ACCA, but it seems much more viable than CICPA. I will reconsider my goal settings. Thanks for the contribution, gato! :)
