Gmail unusable in China?

I access gmail several times every day from Beijing through China Netcom ADSL, and it has only rarely given me problems. ISPs elsewhere may be different, however.

I have noticed that the site gmail comes up much more quickly than google.com site. In the US, google.com would appear nearly instantaneously.

The slow down is probably caused by the firewall. Thus, I have been using google search through my gmail account. Curiously, it's faster to access google search through gmail than through google.com itself.

I have another question related to gmail.

As you probably all know, we can put (big) files into gmail (and then easily flunk/send it to another gmail client/or another mail address) using xmailharddrive:

http://www.xmailharddrive.com/

Now about the bug:

I have two gmail addresses, and I notice that in one gmail address the files only last for one day and then disappeared.

In the other gmail address, the files lasts about a month and then disappeared successively (not all of a sudden).

How come? How can I set things up?

thx

I have had no probs with gmail in the SW of China for the past year or so.

The only issue is if you are already logged in and close the window/go to another page.......if you try to use http://gmail.google.com to go back it will simply continue refreshing itself endlessly.

You then need to go to google and click on "my account" and get back that way.(you can also sign in this way)

Could be me but I've had the same thing on different OS's on my pc and on other pc's.

Anyway, I dont really consider it a problem but I thought you should know.

In China, if you do a search for a "sensitive" topic on Google, the screen will go blank, and then you can't use Google for a few minutes.

Well, that same thing seems to be happening to my Gmail account! When I click on non-sensitive e-mails, it works well. But as soon as I click on one about Bingdian and Li Datong (in Chinese) the account goes blank for five minutes or so!

Has anyone else experienced this? I'm hoping it's just a fluke.

You could also use the Firefox extension "Customize Google" to ensure you always connect to Gmail via https.

The "Oops..." message isn't necessarily China related. I've gotten it on several occasions outside of China, usually when my internet connection was not very good, and with https enabled.

Gmail does soeem to have some problems since they added opn the chat service! I have had problems logging on because the chat times out. I don't even want chat! But can't find anyway to disable it.

Bizarrely, I find it is much better to load Gmail from one of the browsers it doesn't support. These ignore the chat service. and let me actually see my email!

But, hey, it is still in test mode!
