You will find this transcript helpful if:
1. You are a visual learner.
2. Learning to read Chinese is just as important to you as learning to speak it.
3. You don’t want to rely on pinyin.
4. You prefer a syllable-for-syllable transcript of what you’re hearing.

For the five people who fit this description, drop a line and let me know how you like it!

This transcript includes the English narrator (12pt Times New Roman) and all of the spoken Chinese in simplified text (18pt Sim-Sun). I used 18 point for the Chinese text because I don’t know about all the other geniuses on this board, but as a beginner I often have difficulty distinguishing different characters apart.

This half of the transcript is 152 pages. If you’re smart and print it out double-sided, you’ll notice that the page numbers and lesson numbers are printed on the bottom outside corners and the times for the lessons are in 3-minute intervals on the outside margin next to the corresponding line of dialogue.

When I get done editing the second half, I will probably go back and add pinyin at the beginning of each lesson for the included vocabulary so that you too can become a speed-typer in Mandarin!

Lessons 16-30 were posted here.

Knock yourselves out!

Update 12 July 06 - Changes noted elsewhere in the forums have been made to the files. They are now split up into 5-lesson sections.

Update 04 February 07 - Files have been moved to my own site: tarynstranscripts.com so I can shamelessly beg for donations!

Are you planning to do the rest of the pimsleurs? That would be fantastic. Nice work, thanks.

Great! I like it. Of course I'm missing pinyin, but it will be good for using dictionary.

We are waiting for the continuation

Have you tried this listening course from China Radio International?

Its really useful to have it without the pinyin. If the pinyin is added I find myself looking at the pinyin rather than the characters every time which is not good for learning the actual writing. I end up having to cover up the pinyin as I read. Thanks so much for this. :)

The China Radio International audio download server seems to be down for the weekend.

But the CCTV download works:

Hey gato. I did check out the ezmandarin "transcripts" but they're actually just transcriptions of the dialogues. While that's helpful, it doesn't break the words down syllable-by-syllable like the transcript I did.

It's a lot more helpful when you're learning how to read if you can isolate the sound of each character as its used in each word.

As for everyone else, I'm plotting along through the rest of the lessons. They're all typed up but I'm going back through to check for errors (of which there are many!)

I see. The ezmandarin transcripts might be used as a comparison then.

This is great. I just noticed your work while I was editing a wiki page that I've been working on, where I wanted to have people collaborate on a full transcript of Pimsleur - I guess that's not so important now!

Also, in addition to your's being more complete than other sources (Ezmandarin's, Marcel Nijman's), your's also seems to be more correct ('de'...).

One minor comment though - in lesson 13, you use 讷 for "here you are". My gf said that's not right, and she doesn't think there is any character for this expression.

Also, regarding your comment about adding pinyin, I'm conflicted. Even though it would be helpful sometimes, I agree with the earlier post that it's impossible to read the characters w/o seeing the pinyin. To solve this, I've been posting text to my own private webpages, and using rikai.com to help with the words that I don't know.

Anyway, thanks for the great work!

That's interesting. I was a bit conflicted about including 讷 at all because I couldn't find an exact translation.

I wonder if anyone else could offer insight. It might be worth starting a new thread.

Anyone? Anyone? Roddy?!

I just read lesson 14 - it looks like there are two typos:

page 149 (11th line from bottom): 'gen' should be 'gei'
page 151 (last line): shi4 should be shi2

Marcel Nijman's excellent transcripts of the Pimsleur Mandarin Lessons went off line some time ago.

Fortunately I had made copies off line, so I have made them available on my website - [Click Here]

Good luck in your studies.

Hello, RobAnt,

thank you so much for the transcripts - without visual aid, studying Pimsleur was such a frustrating struggle!

Best regards,

elsnow.

I found this: http://fizzyfizzd.angelfire.com/

It has all the new words for each lesson from Pimseur I, II and III.
Has a nice layout, it is not a complete transcript, but has definitions and pinyin of each new word and has key phrases.
