Intermediate Chinese Grammar online edX course

Maybe because the 'black' part is more intrinsic to the guy than the 'big'.  Like with the Chinese, 很舒服的小房间, the room will always be small, but not necessarily comfy.  Our guy was not always big (and something unpleasant may happen to him to make him 'smaller', perhaps), but he won't change his race.  Same as the old 'single, white female' bit.  She'd always be white (unless she got one monster suntan!!!), but mayn't always be single.

Does anyone else think this makes sense, or have any better ideas?

PS Where does the homework come up?  I only discovered and started this yesterday, so have only done the first 2 vids (need to do some major catching up tomorrow etc), and so haven't seen anything about exercises or whatever yet.

Also, the course vid list says 'homework due 28 Sept'.  Is it submitted to someone??

@Elizibeth_rb

You submit it by clicking the check button at the bottom of each section or you can save your work, then it is not submitted and you can change it later.

You get 5 chances to submit and after 5th one it has a show answers button.

There are more videos than weeks left till the 28th, I suppose you can watch them before then, but I thought it was one video a week.

I think it is submitted to a robot because you have to get it exactly right with spacing and punctuation.

And don't worry about catching up, so am I because I couldn't get the vids to work till the nearly the beginning of the second week.

Thanks for posting the link to this. Got up and running with it last week, and it is great. Pitched just right for what I need.

I'm based in the UK, but I've ordered the book via Amazon.com. It is delivered from China anyway, so doesn't make any odds, and costs about £22 delivered to the UK, rather than the £82 on UK Amazon.

Cheers, Will

No, it'[s one section per week, i.e. one set of videos.  I worked that out OK, but I haven't seen anything about homework on the course as yet and, yes, I'm behind....  I'm about to try and catch up a couple of vids though. :)

Well submitted the homework for the last time, didn't do too bad.

But now i have discovered the second part with the text and the 3 questions to be answered in the forum. way too late to do something sensible, but I  going to have to give it a go tomorrow.

Any one know what happens if we miss submitting any part of the homework?

I think I will be better organize from now on as i am beginning to understand how it all works, think I am not going to do to well on the homework this time but hope to improve.

The 2nd part doesn't seem to be part of the homework, but just a student discussion starter.  If you click on the 'Progress' link from the course page, you'll see your overall homework mark and, as I got 100% without joining in the forum discussions, you won't need to either.

At the level I'm at (never mind the one I should be at!), I would have been furious with myself for anything less!  Still, one or two questions had me thinking....

And, of course, I'm behind with week 2's stuff...

I found week 2's homework massively more difficult than week 1's homework... I struggled for ages before getting a not very magnificent 6/8 out of the first part , and I've still not having finished the second part. I suffered about 13½ minutes of furiousness with myself, before reminding myself that what matters is doing the studying... :)

I am also taking this course. I am taking another edx course and noticed this one and jumped on it. I would also say that I am not at an intermediate level with grammar (I would say that is the weak link in my knowledge) but am taking this course anyway. I got slammed on the last homework and barely passed. Oof. I'd better get on Week 2's homework! Following the lectures is great--a good practice for listening comprehension and I find that I can generally follow everything that she says. To be continued. Chris Two Times

Hello and welcome, glad to hear someone else had problems with the homework last week.

Grammar is also my weak link and my listening skills are weak but I am persevering.

Is the other course anything to with Chinese? Just interested if there are any others i may have missed.

The email I received from the course today has reassured me that the problems are not necessarily with my grammar (though they may be) but also teething problems with the course. Here's the relevant text, if you didn't receive it:

第二周的小考试里,也有同学给出的答案是对的。可是,因为系统里我们事先没有考虑到所有可能的答案,所以,同学们的答案,系统说No!很抱歉啊,老师希望大家不会因为这个问题感到诅丧(frustrated)。

   有个建议:如果大家在做小考试的时候,觉得自己的答案是对的,可是系统总是说No的时候,大家可以到论坛里请教一下我们的两位助教。

Onwards!

I've watched 6 out of the 10 lesson vids for week 2 and made a start on the homework.  I left about 3 questions for later and got a whopping great ONE correct!!  So, you're not alone if you're having this problem.  I just thought that I might get on and do some of the Qs before I forgot what we'd learned, but I'm struggling to get them to correlate.  Better watch that last 4 vids before trying again.  I don't want to fail, my ego can't take it!!! :D

Shelley, I've also signed up for the HarvardX ChinaX 7 and ChinaX 8 as well as one on Chinese Thought.  I've only registered on an 'audit' basis, and plan to mostly listen to the vids as I'm stitching.  There didn't seem to be anything else on the Chinese language thus far, although there are one or two *in* Chinese.

This is all deeply reassuring. Thanks, all!

My ego is bruised and battered... but with 60% in week 2 (and the final two questions given up on, as they seem far too open), I've scraped a pass, by some miracle or other, so I'm going to crack on with week 3 and hope that eventually I forget the horrors of week 2.

The Chinese thought course sounds intriguing. I'll take a look.
