Integrated Chinese provides the definition as "have to; nothing but... would do." I will use simpler examples to illustrate my point: 他每次去買東西，都非買名牌的東西不可。 Everytime he goes shopping, he has to buy name-brand things 我明天有中文考試，所以非複習這一課的生詞不可。 I have a Chinese test tomorrow, so I have to review the vocabulary of this lesson.
