About this blog

Over the course of next few months, I intend on increasing my vocabulary size by looking up all the new words that appear in 欢乐颂, a Chinese drama.

An idea

After watching all the episodes and identifying 生词, I may write a review/summary/analysis of selected scenes for each episode.

I will write in Chinese and challenge myself to use more advanced vocabs. I hope to increase the number of active vocabs by doing this.

It would be ideal if I can get feedback on the writings using Lang - 8. But that seems unlikely because it looks like the website will no longer be in service.

Kicking it up a notch

I think I can afford to study more new cards per day. So I am increasing the number of new cards from 50 to 100 starting tomorrow.

Digressing

I once tried using the Lua script to go through the most recent texts from Slow Chinese.

The result contained about 300 生词. I was running out of the 生词 in the 欢乐颂 anki deck.

So I added the Slow Chinese 生词 instead. In a retrospect, I suppose it's still good cuz I am still learning 生词.

The bad is that I will not be making a progress on 欢乐颂 for one week.

TLDR: My 欢乐颂 anki deck has been contaminated now. Lol

What am I learning by watching 欢乐颂?

This drama seems to be a perfect fit for me at the moment in terms of the vocabs I am learning.

I can see myself using most of 生词 in the near future.

One thing I noticed is the frequent use of 成语.

I believe that I will sound much more authentic as long as I take the time to thoroughly absorb the expressions used in this drama.

By the way, please leave a comment/feedback/anything. That will encourage me to continue blogging here.

I will answer any question about studying 欢乐颂.

Maximizing the limited time I have.

I wish that I could be learning Chinese full time without having to feel guilty, which happens when I have other obligations to take care of.

Unfortunately, that's not the case now. So I need to limit my time while shooting for the maximum possible result.

To that end, I limit myself to learning 50 new cards and reviewing 100 old cards on Anki.

When the new cards run out, I open up the script in Chinese Text Analyser and start identifying all the new words in the next episode.

This process usually takes around one hour. I have covered the first 7 episodes so far and it looks like there are 200 new words on average from each episode.

I am selectively choosing the new words as I have always been doing because I don't see myself using super professional vocabulary in the near future.

A brief intro

This is the method that I will be using to study 欢乐颂。

How much Chinese do you know now? How long have you been studying?

I have been studying Chinese language for 2 years now.

I have never taken any HSK test.

I feel comfortable speaking in Chinese.

That doesn't mean I am perfect, of course.

I mean that I can say what I want to say and understand the other person with ease most of the time.

Sometimes, I probably sound like a caveman and not so natural when speaking in Chinese.

Vocabulary wise, I have a good grasp on all the vocabs upto HSK level 4.

The Chinese Text Analyser program tells me that I know about 6,000 words as of now. Note that the definition of a word is subjective.

What is your goal?

I will look up every single new word or expression in this drama.

Then, using the technology described in the post that I linked at the very beginning of this post, I will make sure to review what I learned for longer retention than otherwise.
