Bus Audio

Moving away from the photographic today, we have a mere fifteen seconds or so of audio for you, recorded for you in the entirely authentic setting of Beijing's 107 bus.

Some questions to keep you interested . . .

1) What should all passengers do as the bus starts off?

2) Where should recently boarded passengers go?

3) What two forms of payment are mentioned, and what are the associated verbs?

4) Given that this is the east-bound 107 bus, we're in Beijing, and you have access to the Internet - what stop did you get on at?

Big Red Sign

My turn to take the signese car for a spin. [Thanks Roddy!]

Two (easy?) questions:

  1. Where was this taken?
  2. What is it for?

Beyond the textbook: What is this about?

Best for beginners

If you live in China, you have probably seen something similar to this in the last year or so. My snapshots are from this morning.

What is this about? The photo on the left provides detail. The photo on the right provides context. (Click to make the photos larger, to make the small text legible.)

What two words does Chinese turn into this "efficiency contraction," as shown in the bottom of the frame? --  环保。When starting out learning the language in a practical way, beyond the textbook, these things can throw you for a loop because they often are not in the dictionary. (Click to see the answer.)

Best and cheap

The main menu is entirely English and standard cafe burgers and breakfasts. Not been in yet, but maybe next time I'm passing.

Belgrade 貝爾格萊德

I took these pictures on Friday morning (local time) at the site where the Chinese Embassy, bombed by the US / NATO, used to be.

If you like you can try to (1) identify the characters on the plaque with missing strokes; and / or (2) read the words on the pink ribbons of the wreath.

Back to School

I live next door to an elementary school, and walk past it's side gate pretty much every day. Last week was nice and quiet as the kids were still on holiday. But they're back now.

Spotted this little etching which mysterious appeared right next to the school gate a few days ago…

At the dog beauty parlour

Spotted in the dog beauty parlour today (yes, they exist, yes there was a walk in wardrobe of dog clothes, no I was not a customer). Made me smile.

What's going on with 愛犬島 and the UK picture? Am I meant to understand the UK is "isle of dog lovers"?

While travelling on the Chongqing subway last summer, I noticed a series of public adverts designed to encourage healthy use of smartphones, all based on the 四大名著 (four great works of Chinese literature). Being both a lover of the 四大名著 and a hater of smartphones, these humourous ads caught my attention enough for me to want to take a photo of each. This first one is based on 西游记 (Journey to the West).

这样还能取经吗?

贫僧从东土大唐而来,去往西天充电玩手机

取经圣僧成手机迷弟,行万里路怎忘记初心?

为了自身的梦想与目标,请合理正确使用手机。

It asks if the monk (贫僧/圣僧) is travelling all the way to the west just to recharge and play with his phone ("去往西天充电玩手机"). Has he forgotten his original aim (初心) of bringing back the scriptures (取经)? It ends by encouraging people to use their phones in moderation ("合理正确使用手机") in order not to be distracted from achieving their goals and dreams ("为了自身的梦想与目标").

Airport hot water dispenser

This machine at Shanghai Pudong was having a bad day. But at least management offered a clear explanation.

Aged ad

The sun and rain recently is aging these adverts nicely.

1) What's for sale

2) Where do they come from?

3) What price are they for sale at?

4) Where should you go to make a purchase? Not sure I would have got this one easily without knowing the area.

Admonition at the dining table

The saunas 洗浴 I visit all have something similar to this on prominent display as a tabletop sign of some sort in the dining room where free lunch and supper buffets are served. This one was just slid under the glass. These have been a prominent fixture for several years. Loosely enforced, if at all. Still, a reminder as to what constitutes suggested behavior.

A Hand Scrawled 春聯

During my annual adventure into the Chinese outback for Spring Festival I decided to keep myself occupied by going on a search for the most unique 春聯 in the neighborhood. We went to 百年 in an unfamiliar part of town on the last day and I came across this old house. Pasted in the middle is a tiny, but proud brand new 2018 year of the dog calendar. After coming across an endless number of free brand advert 春聯, this was a bold and refreshing thing to see. Happy Year of the Dog to all.
