This music comprehension 挑战 will test your 听力 and 翻译 abilities. The answers to questions #1-9 are all in Chinese and directly taken from the song so you don't need to make anything up, just listen and write down what you hear. The number of characters are in the parentheses next to each question and the out-of-order characters are also provided below. There are no extra characters. The answer to question #10 is your own English translation.

If the lyrics are hard to figure out, here's a youtube link (without subtitles) of Mickey He singing that is more clear:

1. In the second verse, what is she not begging for? (4)

2. What's drifting in the sea of bitterness? (5)

3. Why does she "cut a piece of candle light?" (5)

4. Holding her hands in supplication, she ... (6)

5. What does she hope that he stops doing? (5)

6. What does she hope to do under the Bodhi [Tree]? (5)

7. In the first verse, what is she not begging for? (4)

8. What happens before she quietly sings? (7)

9. What does she devote to provide for him? (4)

10. Turning back, she realizes ... (Answer in English)

Out of order characters for the answers:

将回纶转目观

静经世的默上

荡气肠的默醉

点久地时模一

长求累一想静

乞光天的倒旧

乡苍亮温了柔

流样生

Crap, I couldn't get a single question on the first listen.

EDIT: Now I've listened to it at least five times, and I've only answered two. The second version of the song is a little easier to understand, but not by much. I actually can understand a decent amount of this song, but the questions almost all refer to the parts that I can't.

EDIT 2: Interestingly, I can figure out exactly where the Bodhi Tree part is supposed to be, but I still can't make out the syllables clearly enough to get it!

This is the best I can do without looking up the lyrics.

4. Holding her hands in supplication, she ...

5. What does she hope that he stops doing? (5)

Really curious to see if anyone can answer all the questions.

When you say looking up the lyrics, do you mean using the out of order characters I provided or looking up the actual lyrics of the song? I am pretty sure this one is doable (at least 1-9) by just using the out of order characters. I guess it's tedious but you'd have to probably sound them out and do elimination of characters. I specifically tried to make this challenging but doable. I didn't want to repeat the wonton challenge.

You got two right so far so keep going!

These are my answers after looking up the lyrics online:

1. In the second verse, what is she not begging for?

2. What's drifting in the sea of bitterness? (5)

3. Why does she "cut a piece of candle light?" (5)

4. Holding her hands in supplication, she ...

5. What does she hope that he stops doing? (5)

6. What does she hope to do under the Bodhi [Tree]? (5)

7. In the first verse, what is she not begging for?

8. What happens before she quietly sings? (7)

9. What does she devote to provide for him?

10. Turning back, she realizes ... that he's already dead!

It wasn't that challenging once I had the lyrics in front of me, but without them there was no way I would've gotten it.

Thanks for trying it out and I'm glad this 挑战 sparked your interest in watching a TV series. That's pretty cool. I've heard of 宫锁心玉 but haven't had the chance to watch it yet. I actually found the 新版 of this song on sogou and didn't realize it was the theme song for that show until I searched for the video. I might check it out later myself.

Hey Geaves and all those who tried this. I had a discussion with feihong about the difficulty and realized I could have designed this challenge a bit better. So don't worry because I couldn't have done it as well. I've got another one coming up that (I promise) will fix this problem. So hang on tight.
