I think it'd feel less odd as a simplification if it came from 虫+毫 and not 虫+豪, but 豪 and 毫 seem to get their pronunciation from the same place as 高, so I guess it doesn't matter...

 

But like 耗 is the only other character where I can think of 毛 giving rise to a "hao" sound... But it's hào... so I dunno... feels weird. I would be tempted to read it as máo I think, if I had no idea that this was the same thing as 蠔.
