Strawberries513 Posted November 5, 2006 at 04:05 PM Report Share Posted November 5, 2006 at 04:05 PM Well, I am a 16 year old learning Mandarin so of course I need to know the Mandarin words for the following: Cool/awsome Hot (as in very attractive) stupid (like saying, thats stupid) anyone know these? If there are certain ones that are used in diffrent regions, the one that is closest to Beijing usage would be great. THANKS
adrianlondon Posted November 5, 2006 at 04:19 PM Report Share Posted November 5, 2006 at 04:19 PM Your best bet is to find teenagers to chat to on MSN, and copy what they say I know some : 我靠 : awesome!! 挺cool的: cool. I think they pick a character for "ku4" to replace "cool", but you can say "cool" in there and sound even more modern. Oh yeah, 他很out : I think that's from HK. "he/she is not in" - ie not fashionable. You can say "modern" in some sort of Chinese accent and that means ... "modern". All I know for stupid, without being rather rude, is "ben4". 苯
Lu Posted November 5, 2006 at 07:31 PM Report Share Posted November 5, 2006 at 07:31 PM The latest I learned was bao4niu2, meaning something like 'very cool'. Niu2 牛 by itself is also a good word. The original was 牛逼 or 牛B, literary 'cow's cvnt', meaning something like 'fvcking fantastic'. This was shortened to niu2 (sounds less offensive) and now bao4niu2. stBLCU Posted November 5, 2006 at 07:48 PM Report Share Posted November 5, 2006 at 07:48 PM hehe...It sounds intresting:) I think 我靠(wo3 kao4) and 牛逼(niu2 bi1)is not polite. at least you can't say this to your teacher You can say cool directly and the chinese character is 酷(ku4). HOT, maybe you can use 辣(la4) or 吸引人(xi1 yin3 ren2).stupid is "笨(ben4)".
imron Posted November 5, 2006 at 10:09 PM Report Share Posted November 5, 2006 at 10:09 PM All I know for stupid, without being rather rude, is "ben4". 苯 This should be 笨, not 苯
adrianlondon Posted November 6, 2006 at 05:42 AM Report Share Posted November 6, 2006 at 05:42 AM So it should. I picked the wrong one from the list without looking too closely.
Yang Rui Posted November 6, 2006 at 06:06 AM Report Share Posted November 6, 2006 at 06:06 AM For "hot" as in very attractive, you can say 正 zheng4 eg. 她很正 But i think Chinese is especially rich in colloquial, teenagerish ways to say someone is not attractive eg. 他长得很。。。 。。。爱国 。。。对不起人民群众 。。。抱歉 。。。突然 and my personal favourite: 他长得很遵守交通规则
againstwind Posted November 6, 2006 at 01:21 PM Report Share Posted November 6, 2006 at 01:21 PM But i think Chinese is especially rich in colloquial, teenagerish ways to say someone is not attractive bao4niu2, I think you mean 爆牛 (非常牛). Teenagers here like to use 爆 and 超, which means very, quite or rather, to replace 非常, 十分,特别 and 相当. Here some supplements: Hot (as in very attractive): 正点 stupid (like saying, thats stupid) 傻,傻冒,傻B(this one is a dirty word, pay attention please) But i think Chinese is especially rich in colloquial I agree! there are some impressive expression I remember 长得难看不是你的错,但出来吓人就是你的不对了。 ( It's not your fault to be ugly, but it is your guilt to shock people outside.) 两条人命!(从后面看想死人,从前面看吓死人!) (You do kill me when I watch your beautiful back, missing you; You do kill me when you turn back, leting me see your awesome face!)
Lu Posted November 6, 2006 at 04:02 PM Report Share Posted November 6, 2006 at 04:02 PM bao4niu2, I think you mean 爆牛 (非常牛).Thanks for that, I had no idea how that bao4 is written.Teenagers here like to use 爆 and 超I tried chao1niu2 as well, but although it got the meaning across my friend had a good laugh over it, so that apparently wasn't right. Might work in Taiwan though, I don't know. Chao1 can be used with other words, though.

I guess probably they are surprised that you can use chao1 or they don't know it. Anyway, it is a very informal expression used by youth. At least, many young people in Beijing know it. qingfeng Posted November 9, 2006 at 04:21 AM Report Share Posted November 9, 2006 at 04:21 AM As for "cool", you can just say "酷", ku4, which is quite common and popular in China. "酷毕了" can be used for "super cool". - againstwind, "两条人命" is so funny that I couldn't help...
