I believe I have sorted out the difference between 见到 and 减免, but then pops up yet another word for "to meet" 遇见, which I have no usage examples or explanations. Can anyone give an accurate description of the differences?

hi senorsmile

right,it is "见面" not "减免"

well, talking about 见到 and 遇见.

见到 means "see, with your eyes"

for example:i saw the train coming into the station. (saw equal to 见到)

遇见 means encounter, meet, A meeting, especially one that is unplanned, unexpected, or brief.

for example:he meet her there by chance.

Both words are similar and can be interchangeable sometimes. They mean use one's eye to see something, encounter some events, and meet someone.

For general rule,

when using 見到(to see), you're more likely a third person.

when using 遇見(to meet), you're more likely involved.

For example:

I /see / one piece (measure word) / strange event

It implies you only "see" a strange event, but didn't get involved.

It means you not only see it happens, it also happens on you.

Another example,

I / see / Peter / Kiss/ Mary /one mouth( measure word)

--- Never say:

One more example:

If you say 我 見到 彼得 (I / see / peter)

We know you see him, but don't know if he sees you too.

But if you say

We're more certain that Peter and you see each other.

On a related note: There is a lovely song called 遇見 by singer 孫燕姿- Sun Yanzi (aka Stefanie Sun), used in the film Turn Left Turn Right 向左走, 向右走 based on the graphic novel by Jimi 几米 inspired by a poem from Nobel laureate Wislawa Szymborska.

見到 is like the people before me say, an event you witness or a thing you see, or a person you see, but you don't actually meet with.

遇見 is when you meet someone, run into someone (someone you already know). I ran into him on the street.

見面 is when you arrange to meet someone and then meet them. Also 碰面. I'll meet up with her tomorrow.

I hope this makes things a bit clearer.
