糅合 : to combine/mix things that generally don't mix well.

Interesting article I found which gives some background on the correct character to use in this word

膾炙人口-kuai4zhi4ren2kou3-  appealing to the masses, universally appreciated

"從這個角度來看,「Ignorance is bliss」(無知是福)這句英文諺語儘管膾炙人口,然而充其量只是「半真半假的陳述」,應該改寫為「Ignorance of the many is (the) bliss of the few」(多數人的無知乃少數人的福氣)."

The word is 鷹嘴豆(鹰嘴豆).

Lately I've been watching this Hong Kong Cantonese food program titled 食平DD, or Good Cheap Eats 2 in English, when I came across this word. 鷹嘴豆(鹰嘴豆) or "eagle's beak bean".

Or in English, the chickpea or garbanzo bean

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chickpea

If you look at it, it does resemble an eagle's beak. Especially when they've sprouted slightly. Like those pictures of chicks in the nest all cheeping for their mother to feed them.

https://www.google.com/search?&tbm=isch&q=鷹嘴豆

Anyway, I was curious about 嘴. Usually dictionaries give it a definition of 1. mouth, 2. something shaped or functioning like one, or 3. speak, talk.

I was thinking, do they also call bird's beaks or bills mouths as well. And usually when I think of 嘴, I think of 猪嘴, pig's snout cooked 滷味 style. Yummy.

Out of curiosity, I inputted 鷹嘴 into GoldenDIct and got 1.[Anatomy] olecranon

I said wtf is "olecranon". It says "anatomy". Is that bird anatomy or human anatomy? Is that the scientific name for a bird's beak? Long story short. (I know. too late.) :) It's a part of the elbow. Human, I guess, unless it also applies to animal elbows as well...   :Koboshrugshisshouldersinpuzzlementsmilie:

A better definition from the Hanja (Korean) dictionary in GoldenDict.

【취】부리; 주둥이; 사물의 뾰족한 끝
口부 12획 (총15획)
[1] the mouth; lips; bill or beak (of a bird); snout (of a pig, etc.) [2] [n] nozzle
シ·くちばし

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olecranon

Anyway, the Guoyu Cidian web site says that 嘴 originally meant a bird's mouth and was later applied to humans and animals as well. With an example from the Journey to the West.

1. 本指鳥口。後泛指人與動物的口。如:「張」、「閉」。西遊記˙第六回:「(三郎)又變了一隻朱繡頂的灰鶴,伸著一個長,與一把尖頭鐵鉗子相似,徑來喫這水蛇。」

Sorry for the ramble. Not my best when I've just got up. :)

Kobo.

The olecranon actually does apply to animals, at least mammals. It is the long bony part of the elbow that is noticeable on the back side of the forearm when the elbow is bent. There are muscles attached to it to provide powerful extension for locomotion, or in the case of humans just extending our forearms to grab things etc. I wonder how it became 鷹嘴 .

I was just watching a Chinese TV show with subtitles and this the word song2 (尸+从)was used and the character appeared in the subtitles. Afterwards I searched and I wasn't able to find any typed example of this character, but someone posted a picture of it appearing in a dictionary here http://blog.sciencenet.cn/blog-362400-805469.html%C2'> .

The definition for the context the word was used in is 讥讽人软弱无能

Reading Liu Cixin...

等离子体 děnglízǐtǐ  plasma

分子 fēnzǐ molecule

but also, in a fraction, 分子 is 'numerator' and 分母 'denominator'. That's quite poetic, I think. Mother-and-child numbers.

Then I looked up 孤立子 gūlìzǐ, which means 'soliton', and at that point I got in trouble because I don't know what a soliton is (well, I have some idea now since I checked wikipedia, but I think I probably shouldn't learn words I don't know the meaning of).

"九治水"  is a term I came across in an article today on state owned assets.

According to baidu, nowadays it refers to multiple people or departments trying to manage or regulate the same thing and as a result the process is very inefficient and nothing managed well. In an ancient context the phrase indicated that the amount of rain predicted to come in the following year would be very little. The original meaning referred to having 9 dragons responsible for managing water, leaving no one left over to manage the clouds and the rain.

古语意思黄历中用“九龙治水”预测来年的天气雨水很少。原意指多条龙治水,结果没有龙去管行云布雨之事。同样还有五龙治水,二龙治水等等说法。现在意思多指:一件事多个人或多个部门管,结果一人一个意见,谁也管不好
