Entropy_Rising Posted November 2, 2007 at 06:43 AM Report Share Posted November 2, 2007 at 06:43 AM My hands down favorite character is 智. I've always loved the 知 of 知道, where knowledge or awareness is seen as the spoken word which pierces through the BS like an arrow. Wisdom is knowledge that illuminates, hence the addition of the sun to 知 makes 智. How elegant! If I ever give my kids Chinese names, the first syllable will be 智 for all of them. Unless, of course, this character can't be used in names. My second favorite character, incidentally, is 慧 which is used along with my first favorite character to write 智慧. In addition to being aesthetically pleasing (to my eye at least), I again admire how concrete the character 慧 can make a concept as abstract as wisdom: my etymology may be wrong, but I think it's met to represent two hands grasping a broom and sweeping up the dust inside one's 心. And even if that etymology's wrong, that's probably how I'm going to see that character from now on anyways.

YangDizi Posted January 7, 2008 at 11:36 AM Report Share Posted January 7, 2008 at 11:36 AM My favourite 汉字/漢字 (hànzì) is one which does not actually exist but is a combination of 招财进宝/招財進寶 (zhāo cái jìn bǎo) meaning "to let riches and treasures come in". It often appears on gifts and decorations:
atitarev Posted January 8, 2008 at 02:17 AM Report Share Posted January 8, 2008 at 02:17 AM Every period has a different favourite hanzi for me. I felt a little proud when I learned to write by hand without looking up character 赢. I am not even trying to memorise hanzi as complex as the one Yangdizi posted. ABCinChina Posted February 9, 2008 at 10:35 AM Report Share Posted February 9, 2008 at 10:35 AM I like to write 為 and 愛 (the traditional versions) because 為 looks very cool and 愛 has a heart symbol in the middle! Not that anybody cares, but thought I'd mention it!
Danman Posted April 14, 2008 at 05:07 PM Report Share Posted April 14, 2008 at 05:07 PM My favourite of the moment is 两, not so much because of aesthetic resonance, as because of personal association : kid sister and myself on the swings way back when.
