Roddy, if it makes you feel any better: if you ever come to Taipei I'll show you the microwave that isn't there :-) Taiwan actually has a lot of illegal floors and rooms. Many people build another small floor on top of an apartment building. Such rooftop places generally have huge balconies and a great view, but get very hot in summer.
