I don't understand how characters come together..

Ok, I REALLY don't get how 東西 can come together to mean thing(s)

The tour guide gave us a story on this when we were in Xian. The details are sketchy after a few years, but it really came from east and west. I think the east and west gates of the city but I can't say that for sure. Of course, this could be folk etymology, but that is what we were told.
