Quest Posted June 3, 2004 at 12:12 PM Report Share Posted June 3, 2004 at 12:12 PM would you be happier if the dog is replaced by a cow? 口 口 牛 口 口 btw I can't relate 4 mouths 1 dog to the meaning of 器.

nnt Posted June 3, 2004 at 12:22 PM Report Share Posted June 3, 2004 at 12:22 PM According to http://zhongwen.com/ the meaning is: picture of cooking vessels guarded by a dog... quite the reverse of the "obvious" interpretation!
高可文 Posted June 3, 2004 at 08:10 PM Report Share Posted June 3, 2004 at 08:10 PM A beginner's dictionary that I own (常用漢字) says that the four 口's represent people, and that the idea of dishes (and later equipment) comes from the idea of "dishes for people and for the dog." However you interpret it, this is a strange character. There's something to michfr's reading though, zhongwen.com gives "roast" as an archaic meaning for 然, the meat (肉) of a dog (犬) on the fire. ala Posted June 4, 2004 at 06:10 AM Report Share Posted June 4, 2004 at 06:10 AM 器 mainly means equipment and tool (hence guarded by a dog). The word organ also uses this character.
eion_padraig Posted June 5, 2004 at 01:21 PM Report Share Posted June 5, 2004 at 01:21 PM This is one of those characters with a few others that doesn't seem to "fit" in with other chinese characters. Of course this is just a silly limitation in my own mind. There are a few others, but I don't know what they mean. Eion
laopengyou Posted June 9, 2004 at 12:21 PM Report Share Posted June 9, 2004 at 12:21 PM picture of cooking vessels guarded by a dog... I would say : picture of cooking vessels licked by a dog... ;-)
