Yeah, this sounds Chinese to me. 离学校不远的地方 and 离学校很远的地方sound OK but not 离学校远的地方 or 离学校近的地方 Normally， I would say 我们的学校附近... or 我们的学校这一带... or 靠近我们的学校...
