Thanks. I'm not going to try to make total sense of the difference in romanisation at this point, but I do have one more question:

I found: 比太陽更光 Bit sing hung yat gwong (Mandarin characters, Cantonese pronounciation, but what he sings does sound like this).

But the version leeyah just posted says 熱(yit) 勝(sing) 紅(hung) 日(yat) 光(gwong), with 熱yit instead of 比 bit. Which should it be?

I know nothing about Cantonese but I don't think the above transcription is correct (I'm a genius, just in case you ask ). I'd go for leeyah's version (as it looks correct in some way ):

Hey, no fuss ;) Usually there are two different versions: one Cantonese, the other Mandarin (the reason for this is obviously commercial - Mandarin version addresses a significantly larger audience). *And of course the two languages being quite different in rhyme etc. it is mostly impossible to just use the same text and make it sound equally good in both, right? So the lyrics ARE usually quite different. Hence the confusion. 男兒當自強 sung by George Lam goes: 熱血熱勝紅日光 jit6 hyut3 jit6 sing1 hung4 jat6 gwong1 see: http://www.cantonese.sheik.co.uk/phorum/read.php?10,32528,page=2 嗯 comparative case in Cantonese is also different that's why there's no 比太阳更光  Besides the song (男兒當自強) is a very popular movie theme and has many, many versions google it or baidu it and see for yourself ^-^

*Here are some examples of the above mentioned: 希望-《大长今》主题曲 has both versions (Kelly Chen);Leslie Cheung's 倩女幽魂 & 倩女幽魂2008国语版;Andy Lau's 为爱瘦一次,来生缘also have two versions; Emil Chau's 刀剑如梦 is probably a perfect illustration (if you want a proof for this look for the 刀剑若梦 video with karaoke subtitles):

etc etc etc etc etc .....

Leeyah, thanks again. Jit6 hyut3 jit6 sing1 hung4 jat6 gwong1 it is then.

HashiriKata: I know that that is not the transcription of those characters, that's just what you're supposed to sing when you see those characters appear. The characters don't match the actual lyrics in Cantonese.

I don't actually know any Cantonese beyond Lei ho, if I'll ever actually go and learn it I promise I'll pay attention to correct romanisation. At this point I'd just like to learn this song. Thanks to all.
