Hello all, I am half chinese and half british and I am currently studying Mandarin chinese as part of my degree at Nottingham. Anyway until about 3 years ago I never even knew mandarin existed; I thought that everyone in HK and china spoke Cantonese!!

I live in a very cantonese speaking community with all the newspapers and TV programmes all in cantonese, and was shocked when I started learning chinese (assuming it was cantonese) to find out that Chinese has many different dialects; that's when I decided to learn Mandarin.

Anyway, I was wondering if someone could explain to me the difference between the following words and their usage, please: (sorry, i'm still learning the tones)

gan jue

jue de

ren wei

gan dao

yi wei

As well as :

leng

bing

dong

liang

the top mean feel/ think and the bottom list means cold, I think:

therefore how would the following sentence

i think it is cold outside or

i feel it might be cold outside

it doesnt matter which of the above words are used in the sentence, does it?

thank you.

These are Simplified characters and Hanyu pinyin:

凉liang2 -cool

冷leng3 -cold

冻dong4 -freezing

冰bing1 -ice, icy, but not used alone

Different degrees of coldness, not really interchangeable.

冷leng3 -cold

我觉得外面很冷.

Wo3 jue2 de5 wai4 mian4 hen2 leng3.

(I)(think,believe)(outside)(is cold).

I think it is cold out side.

我感觉外面有可能很冷.

Wo3 jue2 de5 wai4 mian4 you2 ke3 neng2 hen2 leng3.

(I)(feel, sense)(outside)(possibly, might)(is cold).

I feel it might be cold outside.

gan jue 感覺 verb - to feel (it can mean "with your senses" or it can mean the same as "to think" as in "to have as an opinion" -- i.e. "I think it should be done this way.")

jue de 覺得 same as 感覺

ren wei 認為 verb - to believe, to think (as in "to have as an opinion" or "to consider")

gan dao 感到 verb - to feel (usually with your senses)

yi wei 以為 verb - to believe, to think (usually used when one thinks incorrectly -- i.e. "I thought I had 2 apples, but in fact I only had 1" 我以為我有兩個蘋果,其實我只有一個.)

leng 冷 adj - cold

bing 冰 noun - ice (but you can say 冰冷 as an adj to mean icy cold)

dong 凍 verb - to freeze (but in Cantonese, it can also be used as an adj - cold)

liang 涼 adj - cool, verb - to cool off

i think it is cold outside or

i feel it might be cold outside

The best words for "think" and "feel" (in this context they mean "believe") here would be 覺得, 認為, or 感覺, and perhaps 感到. For cold, use 冷. i.e. 我覺得外邊很冷. or 我認為外邊很冷.

If you want to say, "I can feel (with my senses) that it's cold outside," the best choice would be 感到, and perhaps 感覺 or 覺得, but not 認為 or 以為.
