omission of linking adverb 很

Calif

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have a question about 很 - is it always necessary when linking a noun or pronoun to an adjective? I seem to remember this sentence 我饿乐!

If 很 can be omitted, then under what circumstances - apart from the inclusion of other adverbs like 非常,真的,等等

i would never say 我累,她可爱, right?

Thanks in advance.

i would probably describe it this way: it is not necessary but it is more common to have some form of a modifier with the adjective then not ie 太,非常,极了,etc.

But Guoke is absolutely right. The split might be something like 60/40 if that. If you are making a simple statement describing something you will typically use 很 or another form... If you are expressing some more meaning in your sentence then it is not necessary at all. Just depends on what you are trying to convey in meaning.

- No, a typical situation where you don't have 很 is in the negative: 很冷 / 不冷

- Although 很 very often adds no meaning to the adjective (or verb) it modifies, without 很 the adjective often implies comparison: 今天(比昨天)冷。So again, you don't add 很 to an adjective that is used in comparison.

- 很 can truly mean "very" in places, but you will have to look into the context for this (and is stressed in speaking).
