I realize that there a quite a few factors involved in this including, but not limited to, number of hours per week, age of student, types of English tutoring provided, my education, etc., but still wanted to see if there is a ball park figure for me with which I could work. No doubt that the rate here is much lower than in Beijing and Shanghai; is it reasonable to charge 100-125 RMB per hour? I'm not here to rip a Chinese family off, but at the same time I have have no desire to be taken advantage of. Feedback would be most gratefully appreciated! I live in Liaoning, Huludao (where I am one of 6 native English speakers in a city of over 1 million), and 100 is the going rate for private English tutoring. I'm sure a 25% markup is completely reasonable for Harbin. BTW, I plan on moving up to Harbin come Feb, enrolling in HIT Chinese classes, and teaching on the side. VERY few students stay. How do I go about finding a tutoring job? I am an American citizen and grew up in the states but I am of Asian ethnicity so I don't exactly have people coming up to me to ask me for help with English. I would like to earn a little on the side to help pay for HSK classes and living costs since my scholarship is not enough!
