Shenghuo shuiping and shenghuo zhiliang - or something less word-for-word? Any ideas much appreciated.

As you've suggested, 生活水平 and 生活质量 are the standard translations in the PRC for "standard of living" and "quality of life" respectively. For QoL, you also come across 生活品質 (mainly Taiwan?) and 生活質素, but to much lesser extents.
