Cactus543 Posted April 4, 2010 at 11:28 PM Report Share Posted April 4, 2010 at 11:28 PM I had my mind set on studying in Beijing and I've been studying simplified since the beginning and working on perfecting my Beijinghua hah.. However, recently I was accepted into a college that all the Mandarin Chinese programs are taught by Taiwanese and the characters being taught are of course traditional. The college I will be attending offers the chance to study in Beijing, Nanjing, or Taipei. So in short I was just wondering what people thought would be the best location to study in. In a place like Taipei the use of Taiwanese is almost entirely located in the household, right? I shouldn't feel too bad about not using those simplified characters I worked so hard to learn how to write, right? [and yes I sadly know this is the 3rd or 4th thread I've made on studying abroad haha.. This is the last one I promise.]
chrix Posted April 5, 2010 at 01:30 AM Report Share Posted April 5, 2010 at 01:30 AM probably should ask this on www.forumosa.com as they have many more people with Taiwan experience there... Be aware that Chengchi is a bit away from the city, most foreign students like to go to NTU and NTNU...
Lu Posted April 6, 2010 at 10:16 AM Report Share Posted April 6, 2010 at 10:16 AM In Taipei, most people speak Mandarin. You'll encounter some Taiwanese, but if you don't look for it you'll barely notice it. Traditional characters are useful enough, and the transition should be pretty easy. Cheng Chi University is located a bit outside of Taipei proper, in the mountains. It does have a little student town that has grown around it, with a Starbucks and a bunch of restaurants, so you can live there no problem, and there's a bus to the metro that goes to town. It's one of Taiwan's best universities. However, if you can choose, I think NTNU and NTU have better Chinese-for-foreigners programs.
