I see what you mean now about almost.. but the almost definition here is talking about something which is very close to being the same, as opposed to something which is not quite... EX: His copy was almost the same as the original drawing, is not the same as his copy was almost exactly the same as the original drawing-- my feeling for this kind of 简直 is that it's more than just 差不多, it's almost 一模一样.
