Sub . . . prefix

Recommended Posts

I just came across the use of 亚 for ‘sub-‘ for the first time, in 亚显微 – xianwei is microscopic, the ya makes it sub-microscopic. (at least, that’s what I think, let me know if I’m wrong . . .)

Are there any other uses of 亚 like this?

Claw

According to my dictionary, 亚 means inferior or second-rate, so the sub- definition would fit it perfectly.

Another example:

亚音速 = subsonic speed

The opposite of sub-, the prefix super-, would be 超:

超音速 = supersonic speed

超导 = superconduction

超人 = superman

超强 = superpower

超自然 = supernatural
