Walt Disney -- compromise

Do any posters notice that Walt Disney have a compromise on its offical Chinese translation.

Now it is 華特迪士尼

華特 used to be the Mandarin/putonghua translation of Walt and 迪士尼 used to be the Cantonese translation for Disney used exclusively in HK/Macau.

Now Disney US headquarter has standardized the offical translation.

But since 迪士尼 is more frequently used as in 迪士尼樂園, so it is a triumph for Cantonese!

Shanghainese uses 迪士尼 too (the characters were coined in Shanghainese during the black/white Mickey Mouse days). Because, 迪士尼 in Shanghainese sounds EXACTLY like the English pronunciation (including the z) of Disney [diI z ni]. 士 = [z] (English z).

迪斯尼 would be pronounced [diI s ni] in Shanghainese.
