Mulan1 8 Report post Posted November 4, 2010 Hi, I have read about the Zhonghua Zihai (中华字海 / 中華字海) as the largest Hanzi dictionary with about 85.000 Hanzi. ... Can anybody tell me soon as possible how much volumes and pages this dictionary really has? Additional question: Does it contain the pinyin pronounciation of the Hanzi? There is a website (http://product.dangdang.com/product.aspx?product_id=8920578) which speaks of 1 volume and 1784 pages. ... For 85.000 Hanzi??? (viz. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zhonghua_Zihai) Is this really the 85.000 Hanzi dictionary? In only one single volume of 1784 pages? In comparison with this: My Hanyu Da Zidian with about 54.000 Hanzi has 3 vols./4500 pages! Thanks a lot! Mulan1

Mulan1 8 Report post Posted November 4, 2010 Hi, it is urgent for a book seller offers this as one volume with only 1785 pages ... But it would cost about 280 Euro. I simply want to know if this one single book really contains 85.000 hanzi (along with it's pinyin?) as it is described in wikipedia and elsewhere. I only want to know if this not an err or not. When I look at my Hanyu Da Zidian with it's "only" 54.000 hanzi but in 3 volumes with alltogether 4500 pages I am not sure or can only hardly imagine if this could be the very book I am looking for. Bye! mulan1
Daan 139 Report post Posted November 4, 2010 Yes, the book manages to list 85,000 characters in 1784 pages. I don't see it being more useful than the 漢語大字典, however. Most definitions are just one or two lines, because variant characters get their own head entries here. The "definition" is then simply 同 X. Pinyin is provided for some entries, but it's difficult to tell why some have pinyin, whereas most others don't. I would stick with the 漢語大字典. I wouldn't pay €280 for this dictionary unless I was a scholar doing research on say, bamboo strips. And even then - how likely are you to run into one of the characters listed only in this dictionary? I think I would just go to a library to look up characters not listed in the 漢語大字典. (€280 seems insane, by the way - you can buy it off Dangdang for just under 200 RMB, which is about €20)
Mulan1 8 Report post Posted November 4, 2010 Thank you very much for this information. The dictionary would be interesting in so far, as I am interested in Kokuji and the like which the Hanyu Da Zidian doesn't content. ... Is there a simple way for buying it from Dangdang and is it possible to pay for the book in Germany with Euro? What email address do they have? Thanks a lot! Bye! Daan 139 Report post Posted November 4, 2010 Dangdang is the website you linked to. They probably don't take orders by e-mail.
