SIM card question

I would assume that, if Guangdong is like most other places in the country, China Mobile and China Unicom are both viable options, with China Telecom written off in your case since its CDMA-based and doesn't use SIM cards. I've heard Mobile is cheaper for general talk/text whereas Unicom is preferable for 3G/internet usage (Mobile's non-standard implementation of 3G makes it incompatible with 3G on the iPhone, for example). You can get SIM's and recharge cards from Mobile/Unicom retail outlets or from most newsstands.

Recharging can also be done through TaoBao, but its probably more complicated than its worth for just two months...

If you usually go through a fair amount of SMS and data usage, especially for a smartphone, get an M-Zone China Mobile package. For 50 yuan per month, you can get many inclusive texts and a reasonable data allowance. It's the most commonly used China Mobile 'pay and go' package amongst the modern youth.

China Telecom actually does issue SIM cards, though they only work with CDMA-capable phones. In general, China Telecom has lower prepaid fees and more free Internet bandwidth compared to China Mobile or China Unicom. The only downside is that China Telecom has spotty coverage in some areas, though this isn't an issue in large cities like Guangzhou.

It'll be showing up as it's had new posts, not sure how Geeness found it. Thrice12, if it's not about Guangdong specifically, posting in here just means hardly anyone will see your post. Have a search and find an appropriate topic or start a new one. :)
