"When I was a child, I wanted to become a teacher."

I'm working on a composition for school and I'm not sure if this should be translated like this:

我是孩子的时候,我想当一位老师。

We learned this sentence structure for when one action disrupts another, but I'm not entirely sure how to phrase this...

Consider -

小时候,我的志愿是当老师。

我小时候的志愿是当老师。

一位 is not wrong, but can be omitted.

It's the precisest traslation. when=当……的时候; become=成为; was=还是

to show you are a literary youth, you can say

孩提(childhood)时期,我梦想成为一位老师

normal article,you can write

小时候,我梦想成为老师

orally

我小时候想做老师

Dictionaries seem to define 孩提 as being 2 to 3 years old the oldest, when most of us still have no idea about different occupations...

it's just 文艺青年范

the meaning you talk about is clearly shown in the meaning or characters 孩(baby) 提(carry (a basket)). But a lot of us use it in articles like that. Of course, seriously it's mistake. But normally 非老学究会忽略这个问题吧。
