Hii!! I'm an America citizen currently taking a gap year in Shanghai, China and I'm planning on applying for the CSC scholarship, but I'm not sure if I'm supposed to send all my documents to an address in China directly or send them to the US to send to China. I'm so confused! Also, if I do send them directly (to...wherever), do I write the US Embassy agency number?

Thank you!!! Also, YES this forum is so helpful!!!!!

Is anyone who recently tried registering an account with the online application website having trouble? It told me I had successfully registered twice but I have yet to receive either confirmation email so I still can't log on. Just wondering if anyone else has had the same issue.

Howdy and deja vu. Yeah, I'm doing this again.

I don't have much to add that I haven't said before. Thanks to everyone who was helpful and shared info with me last year (Brian and Helios in particular.) Sorry to hear about EU applications this year. I'm not expecting much either, after pretty much everyone on here from the US applying for language study in Beijing or Shanghai was shut out last year. But I've decided I'm going for real this year--self-funded or otherwise--and the paperwork is mostly the same, so I might as well try for the scholarship again.

Applying from: the US

...for: non-degree Chinese language study

...to: the usual Beijing uni language programs

Medical form: filled out by doctor, blew my whole HSA wad

Notary/red stamps: Not yet. UPS store and shady check cashing place are both pretty cheap

Application: I don't really plan on changing much. I highly doubt they'll notice. I might rewrite my study plan a bit. It's not really worth a lot of effort, given the chances.

I wanted to check up on the DC Embassy contact and guarantor info. Should I use the same as last year, or have there been updates?

Thanks, and good luck to all.

I wanted to check up on the DC Embassy contact and guarantor info.

Just out of curiosity, did most people from here use the same guarantor information? If its actually a database they're putting the information into while screening, the fact that dozens of seemingly independent applicants provide the same guarantor may raise a red flag. Just a thought.

Has there been any evidence of any language students from the US receiving CSC last year?

@ms. foo

The contact information should be the same from last year.

I don't think the paper specs are that important, I didn't follow them. I think it is more to keep people from sending in stuff like the wooden plack they got for being employee of the month, or a 2 meter long graduation sign.

Does anyone know if the EU Scholarship (the 100x one) is gone, or if it is so that no one with a European citizenship is allowed to apply for the regular scholarship either (that one that is not aimed towards americans, canadians and europeans)?

Thanks!

Hi all,

I'm from the UK and I'm posting for the first time.

Since January I have been in the process of applying for the CSC scholarship for 1 years' language study and am just making the final touches to my application.

Since Brian_US announced that the CSC will no longer be offering the (100x) EU scholarships, I have been a bit confused.

Last week, the CSC posted this on the University of Cambridge Careers Service website (password protected):

China Scholarship Council

Research Funding Body

The China Scholarship Council (CSC) is a non-profit institution with legal person status affiliated with China's Ministry of Education. The objective of the CSC is to provide, in accordance with the law, statutes and relevant principles and policies of China, financial assistance to the Chinese citizens wishing to study abroad and to the foreign citizens wishing to study in China in order to develop the educational, scientific and technological, and cultural exchanges and economic and trade cooperation between China and other countries, to strengthen the friendship and understanding between Chinese people and the people of all other countries, and to promote world peace and the socialist modernization drive in China.

Chinese Government Scholarships Role The Chinese Government is to make a scholarship available to support a student to study in China on Undergraduate, Post Graduate, Language Training, General Scholar or Senior Scholar programmes. Detailed information of the Chinese Government Scholarship is available here. In order to strengthen mutual understanding and friendship between the Chinese and people from all over the world, and to develop cooperation and exchanges in fields of politics, economy, culture, education and trade between China and other countries, the Chinese government has set up a series of scholarship programs to sponsor international students, teachers and scholars to study and research in Chinese higher education institutions (Chinese HEIs). International students under Chinese Government Scholarship Programs will be allocated in Chinese HEIs designated by the Ministry of Education of P. R. China to pursue their proposed studies in the areas related to science, technology, agriculture, medicine, economics, law, management, education, history, liberal arts and philosophy. One example of the type of scholarship on offer is as follows: Chinese Government Scholarship Program (scholarship quota specified according to inter-governmental agreements). It is established by the Ministry of Education in accordance with educational exchange agreements or MOUs (memorandum of understanding) signed between Chinese government and governments of other countries, organizations, education institutions and relevant international organizations to provide both full scholarships and partial scholarships. The program supports students who come to study in China on undergraduate, postgraduate programs, Chinese language training programs, general scholar and senior scholar programs.

Chinese Government Scholarship falls into two categories: full scholarship and partial scholarship. 1) Full scholarship: Exempt from registration fee, tuition fee, fee for laboratory experiment, fee for internship and fee for basic learning materials; and accommodation fee for dormitory on campus; Living allowance; One-off settlement subsidy after registration for new student; Fee for outpatient medical service, Comprehensive Medical Insurance and Protection Scheme for International Students in China; One-off inter-city travel subsidy (each for coming-in and leaving China): A hard-seat train ticket (hard-berth train ticket for overnight trip) will be provided for scholarship students traveling. In principle, the port of entry is Beijing, or a port of entry near where the target university is located (see website for more detail). 2) Partial scholarship: one or some items of the full scholarship (one-off settlement subsidy and one-off inter-city travel allowance excluded). International travel expenses: applicants are expected to pay for their own international travel expenses unless it is set in bilateral agreements or arrangements. Salary See notes above Location China Requirements Relevant disciplines are as follows: science, technology, agriculture, medicine, economics, law, management, education, history, liberal arts and philosophy. Outstanding students, teachers and scholars from all over the world are welcome to undertake studies and researches in China. Chinese HEIs generally conduct courses in Chinese. Applicants with no command of Chinese are generally required to take Chinese language courses for 1-2 years before their major studies. Applicants who apply for study in science, engineering, agriculture, medicine (western medicine), economics, management and law are required to take Chinese language courses for 1 year. Applicants who apply for study in literature, history, philosophy, and medicine (traditional Chinese medicine, Chinese herb medicine) are required to take Chinese language courses for 2 years. My question is - can I send off my application, but this time for the general scholarship? Is that the idea?

The advertisement doesn't specify the number of scholarships available or whether it is open just to Cambridge students - adding to the confusion...

Can anybody decipher this? Advice anyone?

I'll be calling the Chinese Embassy in London tomorrow morning but I'm not sure if that will help?

Well the scholarship is still open for pupils that attend a university that has close connections with the scheme, so i'm assuming cambridge is one of those universities. This differs to the open to all EU one.

The one you were originally applying to isn't offering it this year, so i'm afraid you're out of luck

The Chinese Embassy won't help you much (see my previous posts), since unfortunately they don't want anything to do with it.

Hi all,

Well looks like I'm going to be applying for this scholarship again--I actually got it back in 2009, but turned it down to opt for one in Taiwan.

Speaking of which @bagpipes1000, yes there is one for Taiwan. It's a pretty sweet deal actually (it's about ~10k US a year and covered almost all of my expenses) Here's the link http://english.moe.gov.tw/ct.asp?xItem=6777&CtNode=10634&mp=2

The deadline is March 31st. The website may be worded in the same weird English as the CSC scholarship, but the folks at your local TECO office will actually respond to your emails and are super helpful. If you've got any more questions about, feel free to PM me.

For everyone else, I wanted to share a bit of my experience from the application process from before:

Application Materials

I know some people have been wondering if certain parts of the application are necessary to actually get the scholarship. Personally, I included everything the app asked for (2 letters of req and personal statement included) EXCEPT for the chest x-ray exam and ECC. When I showed that to my doctor he said it would cost me around $200, and that that was stupid. I think he just wrote "no signs of tuberculous or heart conditions" in those boxes or something like that. I'm guessing this may only work for the US (I'm American), so if you're not from here, you may want to get that stuff anyway.

When I got the Scholarship

This is one of the main reasons I ended up going to Taiwan--I received a letter informing me I got the scholarship in **August** (the letter said I had to be there in September). I had already accepted the Taiwan scholarship by then, so I couldn't even really consider taking it. Interestingly, my girlfriend at the time applied at the same time as me and received her acceptance letter around May. Moral of the story: not to give you false hope, but if June rolls around and you haven't heard anything, you may still get in.

Anyway, just thought I'd introduce myself. Also, I'll probably need a guarantor this time around. I've read a couple of places people are wiling to give there info... it's awesome people in this forum support each other like that. Who should I get in contact with about that?

Thanks.
