finding a job other than teaching

Hello,

I am thinking about going to study Mandarin full time next year and would like to work at the same time. I want to try and avoid teaching for several reasons but the main one being, is the last time I was out there I found it very difficult to find a teaching job (British born Chinese).

By the time I do go I'll have a couple of years experience as an engineer. It's my first job out of university so my company is having me doing a bit of everything so I won't be really specialised by in any particular area. But I will have experience in project management, design, proposal work, and possibly some commissioning.

Will I be able to find some decently paid work in Shanghai? (~100 RMB/hr) And will my Chinese face result in fewer/poorer job offers? It doesn't necessarily have to be engineering related work and am open to other major cities.

If anybody can offer any advice, it would be much appreciated.

If you are looking for flexible hours and higher pay you might look into preparing applications for Chinese looking to study abroad. There is a big market for it and a company will want to utilize your English skills without the customer having doubts over your looks. My ABC friend had the same problem but did it on the side while working for a Chinese company to offset the low pay.

This will also depend on your Chinese level, because you might get a 30 page document dropped off in Chinese and you need to write an application essay from that and make up references.
