Therefore the series should be read in this order: 1. The new one, with 500 words. 2. Graded Chinese Reader 3 (1000 words). 3. Graded Chinese Reader 1 (2000 words). 4. It's great to see more and more well done graded readers made for learners on different levels. I personally don't like that these Graded Chinese Readers include pinyin, but in any case they are great learning material for students. I won't buy anymore of for this reason. I had Reader#1 and was able to find the stories online without the pinyin. If I could find similar material for the other readers I would buy more of them. Like I said the material in these books is great. If the pinyin doesn't bother you then I recommend them. Hope the publishers catch on to this problem. I downloaded DimSumWarriors Warriors recently and when I read it in English and then turn reveal the Chinese characters, the pinyin over them is impossible not to look at. The book is available from Sinolingua but hasn't made its way to US marketers like Amazon. But I did kind of (in my search) stumble across "Lady in the Painting" which I read in my first year Chinese class so I ordered it for my kids. Should be good. It's professionally enunciated and recorded and is neither slow nor fast. It's read with the natural pauses in dialogue that a storyteller would add. All of these volumes are read at about this same natural speed. The two new ones show the cover of a volume at 2500 that might be next. But the pinyin is just so distracting!!! The pinyin grid is also really uncomfortable to use, I even had to cut the gaps to make them longer since it was so short that it always covered one character. As it was previously said, pinyin may be needed for the 500 and maybe 1000 word version, but at this level it's simply too distracting. I would definitely buy it as an ebook if it had the option to remove the pinyin. Until that happens, I don't reccommend it (in my personal opinion).
