Learning Mandarin by watching videos

Technically speaking, you can't have a "foreign accent" when you speak Cantonese...

Why is that?

  • I can speak English fluently, but I have a foreign accent.

This statement is correct, but technically incorrect.

  • I can speak Serbian fluently, but I have a foreign accent.

This statement is correct.

  • 张三 can speak Cantonese fluently, but has a foreign accent.

This statement is correct, but technically incorrect.

"Foreign accent" is used to talk about speakers having "foreign accents" even when we are talking about languages such as English and Cantonese where, technically speaking, you can't have a "foreign accent".

Watching videos of people speaking Cantonese or Mandarin can help you learn what word "rhymes" with what. Even tough, just like "foreign accent", "rhymes" might not be the best word to use because it might not be technically correct.

My foreign accent when I speak Serbian is a foreign accent, my foreign accent when I speak English is technically speaking not a foreign accent.

So I used "rhymes" the way "foreign accent" is used, for the sake of simplicity. Would you like to look into Cantonese poetry and do an analysis of the video I posted? Alliteration?

Well, I said "rhymes", Demonic said it is alliteration. I used the word "rhymes" for the sake of simplicity because I did not want to go off topic, just like "foreign accent" is often used in colloquial speech. Yet, we did go off topic after all.
