Proof read my pinyin Chinese writing -

JohnLe

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am learning Chinese with Pimsleur CDs and I thought the best way to learn is to be able talk about myself in Chinese first. Could you please point out if I have made any grammatical mistake or any awkwardly constructed sentences? I am also learning Chinese characters but it is way behind my speech. I am also attending a UCSD extension beginner Chinese class. I want to attend a local Chinese meetup group to practice Chinese but right now I am not confident enough to attend because I would run out of things to say quickly. I want to be able to write a page of simple things about me before attending the meetup meetings. I will start out with this.

Many thanks,

Wǒ jiao míngzì John Le. Wǒ shì yuènán yì měiguó rén. Wǒ shì yīgè gōngchéngshī. Míngnián wǒ qù shànghǎi gōngzuò yīgè xīngqí. Wǒ yao kàn Jigè péngyǒu. Wǒ xué pǔtōnghuà yīnwèi Wǒ yao shuō pǔtōnghuà zhōngguó rén

he wǒ de taitai yǒu yīgè xiǎo nǚ'ér. Wǒ de gōngzuò hěn yuǎn jiā. Wǒ tīng Pimsleur CDs xué pǔtōnghuà zài wǒ de jū.

Well, since no one else is responding, here is my crack at it:

wo mingzi jiao John Le.  Wo shi meiguo ren, danshi wo zuxian (ancestors) shi cong Yuenan laide.

[instead of "zuxian", you could say "fumu" (parents) or "shangbei" for previous generation.  If you immigrated personally, you could say, "wo shi yiwei cong Yuenan laide Meiguo ren".  Really, there are so many ways to say this.]

Wo shi yige gongchengshi.    [sounds a little awkward to me, but maybe that's just me.  I would prefer to say that I work at an engineering firm, or my work is ______ engineering (like "jixie gongcheng" or "huaxue gongcheng"]

Mingnian wo hui (or: yao) qu shanghai gongzuo yige xingqi.

wo zai na4r de shihou, wo hui kanwang jige pengyou.

wo kaishi (or: jueding) xue putonghua yinwei wo xiangyao (or: xiwang, or: xiang3) he zhongguoren jiang putonghua.

Wo he wo taitai [no "de"...the relationship is close so you don't use the "de"] you yige xiao nv er.

Wode gongzuo li jia hen yuan.

I think in the last sentence you are trying to say you listen to the CDs to study during your commute.  If so, it would be something like:

wo shang ban kai che de shihou zong ting Pimsleur CDs lai xuexi putonghua.

My apologies for the lack of tone marks.

Also, I looked at it again and realized typing with my thumbs on my iPad isn't the best choice for pinyin...corrected

According to Baidu Baike, "越裔美国人" (Yuèyì Měiguórén) is also fine for "Vietnamese American".

My attempt:

Wǒ míngzi jiào John Le. Wǒ shì yī míng Yuèyì Měiguórén. Wǒ shì gōngchéngshī. Míngnián wǒ yào qù Shànghǎi gōngzuò yīgè xīngqí. Wǒ yào kàn(wàng) jǐ gè péngyǒu. Wǒ xué Pǔtōnghuà shì yīnwèi wǒ yào gēn Zhōngguórén shuōhuà (or liáotiān).

Wǒ hé wǒ tàitai (or lǎopó) yǒu yīgè xiǎo nǚ'ér. Wǒ de gōngzuò (dānwèi) lí wǒ jiā hěn yuǎn. Wǒ zài jiā tīng Pimsleur CD (the most common word for "CD" in Chinese is indeed simply "CD", but remember no plurals!) xué Pǔtōnghuà.

I tried to say that I learn Chinese by listening to Pimsleur CDs in my car while I drive to work.

Thank you all for helping. I find this very helpful. I am in the process of learning new materials. I will add more to what I already have.

( - simplified), my first name in Vietnamese is Kha.
