If your wife's name is 心雅, I would avoid either of those characters, else your daughter and wife look like sisters.

I'd avoid the character "艳", makes me think of "妖艳" ("seductive"), "艳星" ("porn star") etc.

林心雅 sounds quite good.

I would be inclined to let the Chinese speaker make the decision. Might be less complicated and avoid any problems.

Thanks everyone for the fruitful comments :)

@Demonic_Duck : earlier i thought ah Yan is quite good... should be influenced by the ongoing tvb drama :D "使徒行者"

@skylee : the name looks to be the nearest to both our liking, but since this morning when im googling around, found this site, it states, on year of horse, not recommended to use this "心" since horse is not a meat eater.. aiks..  i wonder what kind of explaination is this hmmm ..... Therefore, i thought of replacing this 心 to 歆 (not sure if the pinyin / meaning has any impact ?) but looking at the total of "lines", 心 is the fastest / easiest :D

Btw, one of my cousin's daughter is haing this 心 : xxx 心 xxx (*cant remember the full name), it doesnt matter if we are going to use the same words too right ? as long as it is not the same word ?

@Shelley : you know sometimes, the elders will have "certain" comments :D

心 is fine to me but I would choose 歆 because it's a beautiful character to me and it's not used widely which makes her different from the others. It means endearing.

The name you've provided is just like the girl's name 30 years ago, I mean really old-style. I suggest you to name your baby as 林云 or 林韵. If you want your daughter's name  has the meaning of 雅 pls don't use 雅. That's too straight forward. For my advice 云 is cloud means freedom and pure. As for 韵 that mans rhythm. rhythm means 雅 in some aspects.

I think you mean "rhyme" when you say "rhythm".

Doesn't a newborn baby first get a temporary "milk name" that is replaced several months later?

here in my country, we shall prepare and provide the name to be registered in the local nation registration department within 1 or 2 months time.

However, as for the chinese name, it wont be reflected in the birth cert, so at least we can still change the character that sounds similar to it :)

@abcdefg I've never heard that. Perhaps it's regional.

@firezz I believe most families have generational names, so you may want to look into that. For example, everyone in my wife's generation has the given name "光x" and everyone in my daughter's generation has "圣x". If your wife's family has something like this in their family (even if it isn't consistently used), it may give you some ideas.

I personally like the character 雅, and I know a few people with it, but I've always seen it in the middle slot. 林雅靓 for example. It's by no means a rule, but I think it has a better flow than putting it at the end.

About the "milk name" -- I asked a local (Kunming) Chinese friend who gave her newborn such a name last year. She said it's an old custom that is not followed as much now as it was in times past. She said that she and her husband didn't really want to do it, but their parents strongly urged them to observe the older tradition and they just went along rather than cause a big argument.

I agree 林心雅 is a good name, it give me the impression of a gentle, graceful, pretty girl. The slight issue with this name is it sounds a bit ordinary, as 心 and 雅 both commonly used, thus doesn't give you that wow factor.

The name I can suggest is 林竹韵, which bring a very pretty picture and is a bit out of ordinary.

Why would anyone want a wow factor in the name of their daughter? 林心雅 is common, but it does not mean it is not good.

The real names that I find impressive include 一 (female), 二 (her brother), 大一 (the scientist), 郎朗 (the pianist), 黎明 (the actor) and 無極 (the artisit). Apart from the last one, they are quite simple. The last one is flashy (I wonder if it was easy living with a name like this).

I am not sure if the OP also needs to consider the number of strokes etc. That is very out of fashion but some people think it is important. If there is no superstitution involved the possibilities are limitless. If it is unlikely that the child would be punished by writing her own name a thousand times at school (teachers used to punish students this way), the number of strokes should be unimportant. :D Just pick the name you like best.
