hoshinoumi Posted February 17, 2015 at 01:26 PM Report Posted February 17, 2015 at 01:26 PM Hi guys! I have been studying Chinese for about 4 years and yesterday was the day, I finally got a Chinese name! My teacher from Hongkong helped me find a suitable one. Since my occidental name is Esther (meaning star), he sugested 星 plus a standard surname. So my new Chinese name would be 李星。He told me that he had a female friend called 星星 and that it was somewhat common. I want to get as many honest opinions as I can, since I don't want to have a weird Chinese name or something that sounds like a Hollywood star, but I love the idea of having the meaning of my occidental name in my Chinese name as well. Thank you in advance for your honest answers PS: to be honest, I have quite a long occidental name which actually means Starfish, but I think it would be better if I only focus on the "star" meaning. 889 Posted February 17, 2015 at 01:41 PM Report Posted February 17, 2015 at 01:41 PM "Xingxing" brings to mind a rather large, hairy and lumbering individual. I hope it doesn't fit you. Quote
Lu Posted February 17, 2015 at 01:52 PM Report Posted February 17, 2015 at 01:52 PM I think 星星 is a bad name, since 猩猩, meaning 'gorilla', is pronounced exactly the same. But 李星 seems fine to me (and it sounds like 理性, 'ideal'). Do wait for a native speaker's opinion though. Quote
Tiana Posted February 17, 2015 at 02:00 PM Report Posted February 17, 2015 at 02:00 PM I saw 海星 under your post. What about using this as your Chinese name? It sounds good in Chinese, and is quite close to "Hoshinoumi" too (it actually means Uminohoshi). Quote
cepheid Posted February 17, 2015 at 02:05 PM Report Posted February 17, 2015 at 02:05 PM 李星 is not a weird Chinese name, it's a common one, but it's so common that the name is for both male and female. If you want a female name, I recommend “李星梦”。 星梦 means star and dream and it's a pretty name for a girl. 1 Quote
hoshinoumi Posted February 17, 2015 at 03:37 PM Author Report Posted February 17, 2015 at 03:37 PM Haha so definitely not 星星 李星梦 actually sounds really good, I think I will keep that one then if it sounds girly and nice thank you all for the honest opinions and comments!! I very much appreciate them Quote
skylee Posted February 17, 2015 at 09:59 PM Report Posted February 17, 2015 at 09:59 PM I personally don't like 星夢 (or most any names with the word 夢). It sounds really 俗氣. I think your screen name 星海 is quite nice. You probably know that there is a famous actor called 周星馳. This is his real name and I guess his mother has probably given him one of the best names with the word 星. PS - I have just remembered that there is a famous actress in South Korea called 沈銀河 (but she has retired). I think her name, meaning the Galaxy/ Milky Way, is quite unusual yet very nice. Perhaps you could also consider 銀河, or 星河 if you prefer keeping 星 in the name. PPS - And then there is of course 星華 (star light or bright star). This name is not uncommon. And it is fairly unisex in my opinion. 1 Quote
cepheid Posted February 18, 2015 at 06:14 AM Report Posted February 18, 2015 at 06:14 AM It's always difficult to choose a name for a new baby in any country, I think. There're good names, of course, but it is because some names are good, many people use them and they become popular, so populart that these name are used for either real people or characters in novels and movies. Eventually they might sound cheesy. In my opinion, it's not easy to find an unique girly name containing "星“. 星海 is mostly used for male because of a famous Chinese composer - 冼星海. 86% of the user with the name 李星海 are male in renren.com(a famous social network). 李银河 is a famous Chinese sociologist and sexoloyist. 李星华 is the daughter of 李大钊, one of the founder members of Chinese Communist Party. Other girly names I can think of are 李星语,李星雨,李星月,李星琪,李星悦, these are beautiful names , but they are not unique. 3 Quote
