Anyone done a DELTA?

Hey all,

Has anyone on these forums done a DELTA?

I am thinking about it but I don't know anyone else who has done this course. Just looking to get some general info on it or opinions ...

You can do the DELTA module 1 via distance course but, unless you self study, it's quite expensive (although not relative to the cost of the 2nd practical module).

I did DELTA module 1 by distance. Not a bad experience, better than I expected. The course materials were decent, and the forum was quite active, plenty of new posts every day, and always tutors online to answer questions at any time of day or night. You're right, it's not cheap, but if you're serious about taking the test then I strongly recommend you do the course. A lot of it is focussed on test prep rather than exploring the subject, but I guarantee you will be *very* grateful for once it's time to take the test. I imagine it would be very difficult to pass the test without the training, regardless of how good your knowledge of teaching/language is. They have a very narrow view of what constitutes a correct answer - so even if you write something that you are certain is correct, if it isn't written in the way that they want it, then you won't get the marks.

TL;DR: If you want to do the test, do the course!

Hey thanks for the quick reply :) Thats really helpful.

Who did you do the distance course with? The 'Distance Delta' course is the one that always pops up but their website is 1 or 2 years out of date. I have found that an International House in Poland does a distance course also. I had a good experience with IH Bangkok so tend to trust this organization.

Would you mind either posting or PMing me any reading list you have from the course? I am wondering how easy/hard it is to find the materials. Did your course provide any or was it up to you to find them?

So you have you gone on to module 2 yet? 8)

I did it with Distance DELTA / IH London. The materials that they provide are enough to get through the test, but they do recommend that you try to fit in some additional reading too. I did a little extra reading, not a huge amount, but I guess it did help. Anything by the usual suspects should be useful, Scott Thornbury etc. I found his book on discourse analysis useful and interesting: https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=beyond+the+sentence

I passed module 1 and should be doing module 3 by distance in the spring. Don't think I'll ever be able to do module 2 though, I can't get the time off work without using up a large chunk of annual leave and that is a big no-no for me...as I like to save it all up and take a month off to visit China every summer :-)

There are a few good blogs out there that might help you decide whether it's for you or not. Sandy Millin's DELTA blog is useful, amongst others: https://sandymillin.wordpress.com/tag/distance-delta/
