I think many Chinese want to make friends with others, but they don't really know how to begin with ( hobbies, jokes, common ideas of American and European ) So they choose to communicate in their own group. In China, we have a concept called 学霸. I am not sure if I would have been happy with US campus life, even though I have heard all the best when it comes to quality of education.
