Seriousness of the problem??

Hmm, a sense of perspective is required. Just walk away...

As a Chinese international student in US University, I think the question is really complicated: Chinese people share a totally different culture, and value concept system----like confucianism. even though most Chinese international students don't really think that they believed in  Confucius, but still it has fits into the social value of east asia for a very long time. I think many Chinese want to make friends with others, but they don't really know how to begin with ( hobbies, jokes, common ideas of American and European ) So they choose to communicate in their own group.

I think it is natural to spend more time with people you have things in common with, not sure if this is always due to where you were born.

In China, we have a concept called 学霸. I am not sure if I would have been happy with US campus life, even though I have heard all the best when it comes to quality of education.
