Hi Everyone,

I'm looking for suggestions for my son's Chinese name. His English name is Shepherd, so I was thinking about using 牧 as the family name. For his first name, I would like something that is related to being a gentleman, kind, scholarly etc. Any ideas?

I speak Chinese fairly well, and we are teaching him Chinese, so this is something I would like him to be able to use. I'm not sure where to really start with the name though.

Thank you!

牧 is not a surname AFAIK. It is a pretty good given name, though, like the great poet 杜牧.

Shepherd starts with an s, so consider the surname 守. If you like, you could call your son 守牧之.

Yes 牧 is a surname. Type 牧姓 into Google or Baidu, there's some baby names sites where you can draw some inspiration from maybe.

But be ware of homophones / near-homophones.

I'm just thinking what kind of suggestions you will get if you post '牧姓男孩起什么名字好' to a Chinese BBS. Pretty sure there will be something along the line of 牧羊犬 or 沐浴露.

In my opinion, you should first decide whether you want a two-character name or a three-character name.

牧野 sounds like a good name. A poet is using it as his pen name. Even if you mess with the tones, you probably would just end up calling him 牧爷.

If you study Chinese yourself, do you (or your partner) have a Chinese name already, and if so what is the surname? It would make sense to use that for your son as well.

Traditionally in China, children mostly get their father's surname, but you can also pick 艾 if you two (or you three) want to. What I wouldn't do is pick out an entirely different surname. After all, you're family.

This is true. I suppose I was just thinking that our Chinese names are not used too much, but this makes sense. Thanks.

Hi everybody

Sorry to hijack this topic, but I thought that it would be better to post here than open a new topic about the same subject.

I need a little help from the Chinese friends of the forum: what do you think about the name 高諳東? Does it sound authentically Chinese? What´s the meaning of this name?

Thanks in advance for the help!
