The Cultural Revolution theme may be a novelty to Western readers. But boy is it old.

Just found this very old post, but it made me curious, I really liked this part of the Three Body Problem and didn't realize there were other stories like it. Can you recommend other Chinese science fiction set during the cultural revolution?

I'm sure there are better recommendations, but while you're waiting maybe try 中國式青春。 The premise is that the baby Superman is knocked off course and lands in a Chinese commune. Equally old discussion here.

I read the first book and I don't know what to think. I don't read very much science fiction so I don't have anything to compare it with. I picked it up because I wanted to practice reading and because its "hard science" was said to be solid. I found some of the "science" implausible, such as

Spoiler

using the sun as an electromagnetic amplifier

and

Spoiler

three or four (including the planet) bodies falling around each other without dying or falling apart.

so if this is considered "hard" science fiction then the general state of the industry is probably trash.

As far as the vocabulary is concerned, I think if you already know these things in English (or whatever) you can probably guess what they are from the morphemes and context.

This sounded completely plausible to me actually. And there is in fact a stellar system with three stars turning around each other, although the existing one is stable, unlike the one in 三体. I have a link somewhere, will add it if I can find it.

I'm going to recommend Pandora's Star again.
