fea_ie 0 Report post Posted June 14, 2017 Hi, I live in Hong Kong and I am looking for a Mandarin tutor. Ideally someone with one of the schools so that I can offset the fees against my tax payments (I understand that this is not possible with a private tutor). I am studying for HSK level 5 so my preference is for one-on-one rather than a small/large class. Also, preference is for a native speaker from the Mainland. A lot of preferences!! Thanks in advance for responses! Fea
hkdude 18 Report post Posted June 14, 2017 Oh Well it seems to me quite advanced level. why not consider the online tutors>? it would be way time/cost efficient option. Here is thread about that if you happen to choose online option https://www.chinese-forums.com/forums/topic/53963-chinese-tutor-on-skype/
RjMaan 0 Report post Posted May 21, 2018 Well, Chinese language is really tough to learn. I would suggest you to visit different schools or colleges or you can also visit Chinese Embassy in your country. They would also help you in this purpose. Joe49558529 7 Report post Posted August 24, 2019 I continued Mandarin study while living in Hong Kong. I can offer some advice, which may or may not seem obvious: Look around the local universities or institutes, indeed their may be classes designed for foreigners Find mainland or taiwanese friends. There are many in Hong Kong, and if you become friends with a group of mainlanders, you will get plenty of Mandarin practice in Someone will be more than willing to do a regular language exchange with you By extension to this, consider looking for a Mainland Chinese roommate Remember, just like studying from outside China, just because you're not using language out on the street doesn't meant you can't continue to practice some of most essential parts of language learning, i.e., reading, writing, listening (TV) Don't feel down if locals aren't keen on practicing Mandarin, it's not their native language and most don't really care to speak it, also many locals take a certain level of pride in their ability to speak English Forget about central, stick to Kowloon, and you'll encounter Chinese situations far more than in wealthy Central and the Business Districts
889 1,751 Report post Posted August 24, 2019 " . . . also many locals take a certain level of pride in their ability to speak English." I'd say Hong Kong people take pride in speaking Cantonese. That said, I think that between English and Mandarin, Mandarin will get you a lot further on the streets. Different situation as you move up the socio-economic ladder. I use Mandarin on the streets there. English in fancy restaurants and 5-star hotels.
