My buddy has this tattoo on his leg and I was curious to know exactly what it means. He said it is cantonese for Hannah.

The two last characters are 香港, which means Hong Kong. And I don't understand the first three, but the third one looks a lot like お o , from the Japanese hiragana, so i don't think that's cantonese. But wait for a second opinion.

Looks like 書於香港 (Written in Hong Kong) in bad font. (Hiragana お is actually derived from cursive script 於)

I feel like it should be illegal to tattoo things on people without their knowledge?

If you ask me, it's unethical to practice calligraphy on living things.

A theory on how this happened ...

Yeah, seems the most plausible chain of events.

不愧是來自高羅佩的故鄉啊~ :D

Or he was in Hong Kong, asked for Hannah, tattooist couldn't be bothered working it out, figured he would never be able to read it and wrote something that although truthful was not what was asked for.

Wonder what the true tale is?

A tattooist in Hong Kong would never make up the top two/three "characters".

True, I hadn't thought it through. It was just a guess.

Later, Hannah becomes the president of her country.  She proudly announces to the world her Chinese name during her official state visit to China.

Let's not forget it's not Hannah who got this tattoo. OP says the friend is a man. Hannah just has a boyfriend with questionable taste in tattoos.

It makes a lot more sense than some of the tattoos we see on here. I think I'd choose it for myself.
